The waves rose like black mountains . The ship went down between them like a swan and then rose up again . The little mermaid thought it was great fun , but the sailors did not . The ship began to crack . Suddenly the main mast broke in two , as easily as a reed . The ship fell on its side , and the water rushed in . Now the little mermaid understood that the people were in danger . Then a flash of lightning lit up the sea , and she could see everyone on the ship . Everyone except the prince . She saw him sink into the deep sea . At first she was glad , because now he was coming down to her home . But then she remembered that people cannot live in the water . He could only come to her father’s palace dead . “ No , he must not die ! ” she thought . She swam between the broken pieces of the ship . At last she found the prince . His eyes were closed , and he could hardly swim any more . The little mermaid held his head above the water . And the waves carried them both away . IV . The Beach and the Palace In the morning the storm was over , and there was nothing left of the ship . The sun came up , but the prince’s eyes stayed closed . The little mermaid kissed his forehead and pushed back his wet hair . She thought that he looked just like the marble statue in her garden . She kissed him again and wished with all her heart that he would live . Soon she saw land : blue mountains with snow on top , and green woods near the sea . Close to the water stood a big white building . Perhaps it was a church or a temple . Orange trees and palm trees grew in its garden . The little mermaid swam with the prince to the beach . She laid him on the white sand in the sun . Then bells began to ring in the white building , and many young girls came out into the garden . The little mermaid swam away and hid behind some tall rocks . She covered her head with sea foam , so nobody could see her little face . From there she watched the poor prince . Soon a young girl came to the beach . When she saw the prince , she was frightened for a moment . Then she ran to bring other people . The prince opened his eyes and smiled at everyone around him . But he did not smile at the little mermaid . He did not know that she had saved him . They carried him into the white building . Very sadly , the little mermaid went home to her father’s palace . After that day she was even quieter . Her sisters asked what she saw up there , but she told them nothing . Many mornings and evenings she swam back to that beach . But she never saw the prince , and each time she came home sadder . Her only comfort was the marble statue , because it looked like him . She put her arms around it and forgot her flowers . They grew wild , and soon the whole garden was dark .
