The little mermaid sighed and looked sadly at her tail . “ Let’s be happy , ” said her grandmother . “ Three hundred years is a long time . Tonight there is a ball at the palace . ” It was a wonderful party . The walls of the great hall were made of clear glass . Hundreds of big shells stood along the walls , full of blue fire . The mermen and mermaids danced to their own songs . But the little mermaid sang better than anyone . Everyone clapped for her with their hands and their tails . For a moment she felt happy . But soon she began to think about the world above again . She could not forget the handsome prince , or her sadness because she had no soul . She quietly left the palace and sat alone in her garden . Then she heard the sound of a horn through the water . “ He must be sailing up there , ” she thought . “ I love him more than my father and mother . I will give up everything for him and for a soul that never dies . While my sisters are dancing , I am going to visit the sea witch . I have always been afraid of her . But perhaps she can help me . ” VI . The Sea Witch The sea witch lived behind the whirlpools , where the water turned round and round very fast . No flowers or grass grew there , only grey sand . The little mermaid had to swim between the whirlpools , which pulled everything down to the bottom . Then she had to cross hot mud , full of bubbles . Behind the mud stood the witch’s house , in the middle of a strange forest . Its trees were polyps , half animal and half plant . They had long , soft arms , with fingers like worms . They caught everything that came near them and never let it go . The little mermaid was so frightened that she nearly turned back . But then she thought of the prince and of a soul that never dies . So she felt brave again . She tied her long hair tightly around her head , so the polyps could not catch it . Then she shot through the forest like a fish . She saw what the polyps held in their arms : the bones of sailors , oars and boxes from ships . And worst of all , there was another young mermaid . The polyps caught her one day , and she never swam home again . At last she came to the witch’s house of white bones . There sat the sea witch , and a toad was eating from her mouth . Fat water snakes were crawling all over her . She called them “ my little chickens ” . “ I know what you want , ” said the sea witch . “ It’s very stupid of you , but you can have it . And it will bring you great sadness , my pretty princess . You want two legs instead of a fish’s tail . You hope the prince will love you , and then you will get a soul . ” The witch laughed so loudly that the toad and the snakes fell to the ground .
