“ Don’t you love me more than anyone ? ” her eyes seemed to ask when he held her and kissed her forehead . “ Yes , I love you , ” said the prince , “ because you have the kindest heart . And you look like a young girl I once saw . After my ship went down in a storm , the waves carried me to a beach near a temple , where many young girls lived . The youngest one found me on the beach and saved my life . I only saw her twice . She is the only girl in the world I could love . But you look like her , and you almost take her place in my heart . She belongs to the temple , and she will never leave it . So my good luck has sent you to me instead . We will never be apart ! ” “ Oh , he doesn’t know that I saved his life ! ” thought the little mermaid . “ I carried him to that beach . I hid behind the rocks and saw that girl . And he loves her more than me . ” She sighed deeply , because she could not cry . “ But she lives in the temple , and they will never meet again . I am with him every day . I will look after him and love him , and I will give my life for him . ” VIII . The Wedding Soon people began to say that the prince was going to marry the princess of a nearby country . A fine ship was ready . The prince said that he was only going to visit the king of that country . The little mermaid smiled and shook her head . She knew the prince’s thoughts better than anyone . “ I must go , because my parents want it , ” he told her . “ But they can’t make me marry her . She isn’t like the girl from the temple , and you are . If I have to choose a wife , I will choose you , my silent foundling with the speaking eyes . ” He kissed her and put his head on her heart . And she dreamed of happiness and a soul that never dies . “ You’re not afraid of the sea , are you , my silent child ? ” he asked on the ship . She smiled , because she knew the bottom of the sea better than anyone . That night , while the others slept , she sat on deck and looked into the clear water . Then her sisters came up out of the waves and looked at her sadly . She smiled at them . She wanted to tell them that she was happy . But a young sailor came near , and her sisters went down under the water . The sailor thought he only saw foam . The next morning they came to the king’s town . The princess was not there yet . She was living in a temple , where she was learning to be a good queen . At last she arrived . The little mermaid had to agree that she had never seen a lovelier girl . The princess had kind , smiling blue eyes .
