IX . The Daughters of the Air The sun rose out of the sea , and its warm light fell on the foam . But the little mermaid did not feel that she was dying . She saw the bright sun . Above her there were hundreds of lovely beings , as clear as glass . They flew without wings , and their voices were like music , but no human ear could hear them . The little mermaid saw that she had a body like theirs . And she was rising up out of the foam . “ Where am I going ? ” she asked . Her voice sounded like theirs . “ You are coming to the daughters of the air , ” one of them answered . “ A mermaid has no soul . She can only get one if a person loves her . We daughters of the air have no soul either . But we can win one with our good deeds . We fly to hot countries and bring cool air to sick people . We carry the smell of flowers , and it makes people well again . After three hundred years of good deeds , we get a soul that never dies . Poor little mermaid , you tried with all your heart to do good . You suffered a lot . That is why you are with us now . After three hundred years , you can have a soul too . ” The little mermaid lifted her eyes to the sun . For the first time , she felt tears in them . On the ship , the prince and his bride were looking for her . They were looking sadly at the foam , as if they knew that she had jumped into the sea . Nobody could see her , but she kissed the bride’s forehead and sent a soft , cool wind to the prince . Then she rose with the other daughters of the air to a pink cloud . “ In three hundred years we will float into the kingdom of God , ” said the little mermaid . “ Perhaps even sooner , ” said one of them quietly . “ We fly into people’s houses where there are children , and nobody sees us . When we find a good child who makes its parents happy , we smile with joy . Then we have one year less to wait . But when we see a naughty child , we cry . And every tear adds one more day ! ”
