III . The Two Genies That man was not Aladdin’s uncle . He was a magician from Africa , and he spent forty years studying books of magic . In his magic sand he read about a wonderful lamp under the ground in China . With this lamp he could become more powerful than all the kings in the world . But he could not take the lamp himself . Another person had to bring it out and give it to him . So he chose Aladdin . His plan was to take the lamp and then to kill the boy . Now his plan was ruined , and that same day he went back to Africa . Aladdin was shut under the ground , in the dark . He called his uncle a thousand times , but nobody heard him . He wanted to go back to the garden , where there was light . But the door to the halls was closed too . So he sat down on the steps and cried . For two days he had nothing to eat or drink . On the third day he put his hands together to pray . “ Only God is strong and great , ” he said . As he did this , he rubbed the magician’s ring without noticing it . Suddenly a huge genie came up out of the earth . A genie is a powerful spirit . This one had terrible eyes . “ What do you want ? ” he said . “ I am here to obey you . I am your slave , and the slave of everyone who wears this ring . ” Aladdin had no time to feel afraid . “ Take me out of this place , if you can , ” he said . As soon as he spoke , the earth opened . He was outside again , next to the old fire . He walked slowly back to the city , and on the way he thanked God because he was still alive . When he saw his mother , he was so happy and so weak that he fainted . When he opened his eyes , his first words were : “ Mother , give me something to eat . I haven’t had any food for three days . ” After his meal he told her his whole story . Then he took the lamp and the coloured fruit out of his clothes . Neither of them knew the real value of those stones . So Aladdin put the stones behind a cushion on the sofa . The next morning there was nothing for breakfast . “ I will go and sell a little cotton thread , ” said his mother . “ Keep your thread , Mother , ” said Aladdin . “ I will sell the lamp instead . ” “ It is very dirty , ” she said . “ If I clean it , we will get more money for it . ” She took some water and a little sand , and she began to rub the lamp . At that moment a huge , ugly genie appeared in front of her . He spoke in a voice like thunder . “ What do you want ? I am here to obey you . I am your slave , and the slave of everyone who holds this lamp . ” The mother saw the terrible creature and fell to the floor in a faint . But Aladdin remembered the genie in the cave , so he stayed calm . He took the lamp and said , “ I am hungry . Bring me something to eat . ”
