The genie went away , and a moment later he came back . On his head he carried a large silver tray . On the tray there were twelve silver dishes full of delicious food . There were also six loaves of bread as white as snow , two bottles of wine and two silver cups . The genie put everything on the sofa and disappeared . When the mother woke up , she could not believe her eyes . “ My son , where did all this come from ? ” she asked . “ Did the Sultan feel sorry for us ? ” “ Let’s eat first , Mother , ” he answered . “ Then I will tell you everything . ” It was the best meal of their lives , and there was enough food left for two more days . After the meal Aladdin explained . “ There are two genies , ” he told her . “ One is the slave of the ring , and the other is the slave of the lamp . ” “ My son , take that lamp away from me ! ” she cried . “ Sell it , and take off that ring too . Genies are devils . It is better to have nothing to do with them . ” “ No , Mother , ” said Aladdin . “ My false uncle made a very long journey only for this lamp . He did not want the gold or the silver in the halls . That means the lamp is worth more than all the gold in the world . And I am not going to take off the ring , because it saved my life . ” “ Do what you like , my son , ” said his mother . “ I don’t want to know anything about genies . ” IV . The Sultan’s Daughter When all the food was gone , Aladdin sold the silver dishes to a merchant , one by one . The man was dishonest , and he paid only one gold coin for each dish . When the money was gone , Aladdin rubbed the lamp again , and the genie brought another tray . This time his mother left the house before he did it , because she did not want to see the genie . One day an honest old jeweller called Aladdin into his shop and looked at his dish . “ That merchant is a thief ! ” he said . “ This dish is worth seventy - two gold coins . Here they are . ” After that Aladdin only sold his dishes to the honest jeweller . Mother and son had the lamp , but they still lived simply , as before . The mother went on spinning her cotton . Several years passed in this way . During those years Aladdin spent many hours in the richest shops of the city , where merchants sold silk and jewels . He listened to the shopkeepers , and he learned their good manners . And in the jewel shops he learned something more . The coloured fruits from the garden were not glass at all . They were precious stones , finer than any jewels in the city . But he told nobody this secret , not even his mother . One day he heard an order from the Sultan . Everyone had to close their shops and stay at home . The Sultan’s daughter , Princess Badroulboudour , was going to the baths . Nobody was allowed to see her pass .
