Aladdin wanted very much to see the princess’s face . He hid behind the door of the baths and looked through a crack . Soon the princess arrived with many servants . Near the door she lifted her veil , and Aladdin saw her face clearly . Until then Aladdin had never seen a woman without her veil , except his mother . So he thought that all women looked a little like her . But the princess was the loveliest young woman in the world . She had large , bright eyes , a sweet look and a small mouth . At that moment Aladdin fell in love with her . He went home sad and silent . The next day he said to his mother , “ Mother , yesterday I saw the princess without her veil . I love her so much that I cannot live without her . You must go to the Sultan and ask him to let me marry his daughter . ” His mother laughed . “ My son , are you mad ? You are the son of a poor tailor , ” she said . “ Sultans only give their daughters to the sons of kings . ” “ If you don’t help me , I will die of sadness , ” said Aladdin . “ And you won’t go to the Sultan with nothing in your hands . Do you remember the fruit from the garden ? They are jewels , and they are worth a fortune . Bring me the big china bowl . ” Aladdin put the jewels in the bowl and arranged them by colour . In the daylight they were so bright that it was hard to look at them . His mother was still afraid , but she loved her son very much . In the end she agreed to go to the palace . V . The Mother Before the Sultan Early the next morning , the mother wrapped the bowl in a cloth and went to the palace . She went with a crowd of people into the great hall . The Sultan sat there on his throne and listened to people’s problems . She stood in front of the throne and waited . But the hours passed , the Sultan got up and left , and nobody called her . The Sultan only sat in the great hall every second day . On each of those days the mother came back with her gift and stood in front of him . At last the Sultan noticed her . He spoke to his grand vizier , his chief minister . “ Vizier , I have seen that woman here many times . She always carries something in a cloth , ” he said . “ If she comes again , bring her to me . ” On the next day an officer led the mother to the throne . She bowed so low that her head touched the carpet . “ Good woman , what do you want ? ” asked the Sultan . “ Your Majesty , my request is so strange that I am afraid to say it , ” she answered . “ Before I speak , I ask you to forgive me . ” The Sultan sent everyone out of the hall except the grand vizier . “ Speak without fear , ” he said . “ I forgive you now , before I hear your words . ”
