So the mother told him everything . She told him about the day when her son saw the princess , and about his great love for her . “ I ask you to forgive me and my son Aladdin , ” she said at the end . The Sultan listened very kindly . Then he asked her about the thing in the cloth . She opened it and gave him the bowl . When the Sultan saw the jewels , he could not speak . Not one of his own jewels was so large or so lovely . “ How lovely ! What riches ! ” he cried . “ Look , Vizier . Isn’t this a gift good enough for my daughter ? ” But the vizier wanted the princess for his own son . “ Your Majesty , please wait three months , ” he said quietly . “ In that time perhaps my son can find an even richer gift . ” The Sultan agreed . “ Good woman , ” he said , “ tell your son that I agree to the marriage . But he must wait three months . Come back then . ” The mother went home very happy , and Aladdin felt like the happiest man in the world . He counted the days , one by one , for three months . When the three months were over , the mother went back to the palace . The Sultan remembered her . But when he saw her poor clothes , he began to have doubts . He thought that Aladdin was as poor as his mother . So he spoke quietly with the grand vizier . “ Your Majesty , ask a very high price for the princess , ” said the vizier . “ Then nobody will be able to pay it . ” The Sultan liked this advice . “ Good woman , ” he said , “ a sultan must keep his promises , and I will keep mine . But first your son must send me forty large bowls of solid gold . They must be full of jewels like the jewels you brought me . Forty slaves must carry the bowls . Forty more slaves must walk in front of them , all young and tall , and all in very rich clothes . Go and tell him this . ” On the way home , the mother laughed to herself . “ Where is my son going to find so many gold bowls ? ” she thought . “ And who will give him eighty slaves like that ? ” At home she told her son everything . “ Forget the princess , ” she said at the end , with a smile . “ The Sultan is waiting for your answer , but I think he will wait for a very long time . ” VI . Forty Bowls of Gold “ Not as long as you think , Mother , ” said Aladdin . “ The Sultan’s request is a small thing for me . Please go to the market and buy our food , and leave me alone for a while . ” When his mother went out , Aladdin rubbed the lamp . He told the genie about the Sultan’s request . Very soon the genie came back with eighty slaves . Forty of them carried gold bowls on their heads . The bowls were full of pearls , diamonds , rubies and emeralds . The house was so small that there was hardly room for all the slaves .
