VII . The Palace with Twenty - Four Windows That same evening Aladdin rubbed the lamp . “ Genie , ” he said , “ I want a palace of the finest marble opposite the Sultan’s palace . In the middle I want a great hall with a dome . Its walls must be of gold and silver , and it must have twenty - four windows . Put diamonds , rubies and emeralds around all the windows except one . Leave that one window unfinished . I also want gardens , a room full of gold , stables with the best horses , and servants for the princess . ” At dawn the genie was already back . “ Master , your palace is ready , ” he said . In a moment he carried Aladdin there , and Aladdin could not believe his eyes . The loveliest thing of all was the hall with twenty - four windows . Aladdin asked for only one more thing : a velvet carpet from the Sultan’s door to his own . That morning the Sultan’s guards opened the gates and got a great surprise . Opposite them , on the empty land , there was a new palace . The grand vizier said that it was magic . “ I think you say that because you are jealous , ” the Sultan answered . “ Aladdin is very rich , and money can do wonders . ” That day the whole city had a holiday . Aladdin’s mother , dressed like a queen , went to visit the princess , and the princess welcomed her very warmly . Aladdin left his father’s house for ever , but he did not forget to take the lamp with him . In the evening the princess said goodbye to her father with tears in her eyes . Then she walked along the velvet carpet to the new palace , with Aladdin’s mother at her side . Hundreds of young people carried lights , and the music never stopped . Aladdin ran to meet her . “ Princess , ” he said , “ if my love has made you angry , it is not my fault . It is the fault of your beauty . ” “ I obey my father , ” she answered . “ And now that I have seen you , I obey him with joy . ” During supper , sweet voices sang all the time . The princess did not know that the singers were fairies sent by the genie . After supper Aladdin and the princess danced together until midnight . The next day the Sultan visited the palace . When he entered the hall with twenty - four windows , he could not say a word . Then he saw that one window was not finished . “ My son , why is this window not finished ? ” he asked . “ I left it like that on purpose , Your Majesty , ” said Aladdin . “ I wanted to give you the honour of finishing this palace . ”
