The Sultan liked this idea . He called the best jewellers in the city and gave them his own jewels . But after a month there were no jewels left , and the work was not even half done . So Aladdin sent the jewels back to the Sultan and rubbed the lamp . In a moment the genie finished the window . When the Sultan saw it , he kissed Aladdin on the forehead . “ My son , what kind of man are you ? ” he said . “ There is nobody like you in the world . ” After that , every morning , the Sultan looked out of his window at Aladdin’s palace . And all the people loved Aladdin . When he went out , his slaves threw gold to the crowd . No poor person went away from his door with nothing . When enemies attacked the borders of the country , Aladdin led the Sultan’s army and quickly won the war . But he stayed as kind and polite as before . And so he lived happily and in peace for several years . VIII . New Lamps for Old Meanwhile , far away in Africa , the African magician remembered Aladdin . He poured his magic sand onto a board and read it . And so he learned that Aladdin did not die in the cave . He was alive and very rich , and he was married to the Sultan’s daughter . The magician’s face turned red with anger . “ That tailor’s son knows the secret of the lamp ! ” he shouted . “ But he won’t keep it for long ! ” The next morning he got on his horse and set off . When he reached the Sultan’s city , everyone there was talking about Prince Aladdin’s palace , the greatest wonder of the world . The magician went to look at it . He understood at once that only the genie of the lamp could build such a palace . His magic sand told him that the lamp was inside the palace . Then the owner of his inn told him something more . “ Prince Aladdin is away , ” he said . “ He went hunting three days ago , and he will be away for eight days . ” “ This is my chance , ” thought the magician . He bought twelve copper lamps , new and shiny , and put them in a basket . Then he went to the square in front of Aladdin’s palace and began to shout , “ Who wants to change old lamps for new ones ? ” Children ran after him , and everyone in the square laughed . “ That man is mad , ” they said . “ Who gives new lamps for old ones ? ” Princess Badroulboudour was sitting in the hall with twenty - four windows , and she heard the noise . She sent one of her women to find out what was happening . The woman came back laughing so much that she could hardly speak . “ Princess , there is a madman out there , ” she said . “ He is giving new lamps for old ones . ” Then another woman said , “ There is an old lamp over there , on the shelf high on the wall . Let’s see if that man is really so mad . ” It was the magic lamp . Aladdin usually carried it with him . But he was afraid of losing it while he was hunting , so he left it on that shelf . The princess did not know the lamp’s value . She laughed and sent a servant out to change it .
