The servant went out and called the magician . “ Give me a new lamp for this one , ” he said . The magician knew at once that it was the lamp he wanted . He took it and hid it inside his clothes . Then he let the servant choose a new lamp . The children laughed louder than ever . But the magician did not shout any more . He walked away quietly , left the city and hid in a place where nobody could see him . When night came , he took out the lamp and rubbed it . “ What do you want ? ” asked the genie . “ I am here to obey you . I am your slave . ” “ Take Aladdin’s palace with everything in it , ” said the magician . “ Carry it to Africa , and carry me with it . ” And the genie did it at once . IX . The Wine of Africa In the morning the Sultan looked out of his window , as usual . But Aladdin’s palace was not there . He rubbed his eyes and looked again . He saw only an empty space . “ Your Majesty , I told you that the palace was magic , ” said the grand vizier . The Sultan was furious . He sent thirty soldiers to find Aladdin , who was on his way home from hunting . They put chains on him and made him walk to the palace . The people loved Aladdin , and they thought that the soldiers were going to kill him . Many of them took weapons and stones and followed the soldiers . At the palace , the Sultan’s swordsman put a cloth over Aladdin’s eyes and made him kneel down . He lifted his sword and waited for the Sultan’s sign . But at that moment the grand vizier saw the people . They were climbing over the palace walls . “ Your Majesty , think carefully about what you are doing , ” he said to the Sultan . “ These people are going to break in . ” The Sultan was afraid , and he ordered his men to set Aladdin free . “ Your Majesty , what have I done wrong ? ” asked Aladdin . The Sultan took him to his window . “ Look . Where is your palace ? Where is my daughter ? ” Aladdin looked and saw nothing . “ Your Majesty , I don’t know what has happened , ” he said at last . “ I promise you , I had nothing to do with it . ” “ Bring my daughter back to me , ” said the Sultan . “ If you don’t bring her back , you will lose your head . ” “ Give me forty days , Your Majesty , ” said Aladdin . “ If I don’t bring her back in that time , I will come back here to die . ” For three days Aladdin walked around the city like a madman . He asked everyone about his palace , but people only laughed at him or felt sorry for him . Then he went out into the country , and in the evening he came to a river . “ I will never find my palace and my princess , ” he thought . He was so unhappy that he did not want to live any more . But first he wanted to pray . He went down to the water to wash his hands . His foot slipped , and he caught hold of a rock . His ring rubbed against the stone .
