I . The Woodcutter and the Forty Thieves A long time ago , in a town in Persia , there lived two brothers . Their names were Cassim and Ali Baba . When their father died , he left them very little money . But Cassim married a rich woman . She had a shop , a big storeroom full of goods and a lot of land . So very soon Cassim became one of the richest merchants in the town . Ali Baba married a woman who was as poor as he was . They lived with their children in a small , simple house . Every day Ali Baba went to the forest , cut wood and sold it in the town . He had three donkeys , and that was all . One day , when he was working in the forest , he saw a big cloud of dust . It was coming towards him . Soon he could see men on horses . “ Maybe they are robbers , ” he thought . He left his donkeys among the trees and climbed up a big tree with thick leaves . From there he could see everything , but nobody could see him . The tree stood at the foot of a huge rock . The rock was very high and smooth , and nobody could climb it . The men rode up to the rock and got off their horses . Ali Baba counted them . There were forty , and all of them carried swords . Each man tied his horse to a tree and took a heavy bag from its back . “ Those bags are full of gold , ” thought Ali Baba . One of the men looked finer than the others , and Ali Baba decided that he was their captain . This man walked up to the rock , very close to Ali Baba’s tree . Then he said in a loud , clear voice , “ Open , Sesame ! ” Sesame is a plant with small seeds , a kind of grain . At once a door opened in the rock . The men went in , and the captain went in last . Then the door closed behind them . The robbers stayed inside for a long time . Ali Baba did not move , because he was afraid . “ If they come out and see me , they will kill me , ” he thought . At last the door opened again , and the forty thieves came out . The captain stood by the door and watched them all pass . Then he said , “ Shut , Sesame ! ” and the door closed . The men got on their horses and rode back the way they had come . Ali Baba waited a little longer . Then he climbed down from the tree and stood in front of the rock . He wanted to know one thing . Did the words work for other people too ? “ Open , Sesame ! ” he said . And the door opened . Ali Baba expected a dark , gloomy place . But the cave was big and full of light . The light came in through a hole high up in the rock . There was food , and there were beautiful things everywhere : silk cloth , expensive carpets and fine clothes . And above all , there was gold and silver . It lay in great piles on the floor and in leather bags . “ Robbers have hidden their stolen things here for hundreds of years , ” he thought .
