He went in , and the door shut behind him . But he was not afraid , because he knew the secret words . He did not touch the silver . He took only bags of gold , as many as his donkeys could carry . He opened the door with the secret words and carried the bags outside . He put them on the donkeys and covered them with wood . Then he said , “ Shut , Sesame ! ” and the door closed . And he went back to the town . At home , he drove the donkeys into the yard and closed the gate . Then he carried the bags inside and put them down in front of his wife , who was sitting on the sofa . II . A Coin in the Measure His wife touched the bags and felt the coins inside . She was very frightened . “ Ali Baba , did you steal this money ? ” she asked . “ Don’t be afraid , wife , ” he said . “ I’m not a thief . I only took this from some robbers . ” He emptied the bags , and the gold made a big shining pile on the floor . Then he told her the whole story . “ Above all , you must keep this secret , ” he said . Now his wife was very happy . She wanted to count the gold , coin by coin . “ You will never finish , ” said Ali Baba . “ I am going to dig a hole in the garden and hide it there . ” “ But I want to know how much we have , ” she answered . “ I will borrow a measure . I can measure the gold while you dig . ” A measure was a small wooden box . People used it to measure wheat , rice and other grain . Cassim’s house was not far away . Ali Baba’s wife ran there and asked Cassim’s wife for a measure . Cassim’s wife knew that Ali Baba was very poor . “ What do those poor people want to measure ? ” she asked herself . She wanted to find out . So she put a little suet in the bottom of the measure . Suet is a kind of fat , and things stick to it . At home , Ali Baba’s wife filled the measure with gold and emptied it again , many times . There were so many measures of gold ! She was very pleased . Then she took the measure back to Cassim’s house . But she did not notice one gold coin . It was stuck to the bottom . Cassim’s wife found the coin as soon as her sister - in - law left . Her heart filled with envy . “ Ali Baba doesn’t count his money , ” she said . “ He measures it ! ” In the evening , when Cassim came home from his shop , she told him everything and showed him the coin . It was a very old coin , with the name of a king she didn’t know . Cassim was not happy for his brother . He was terribly jealous , and he could not sleep all night . The next morning , before the sun came up , he went to Ali Baba’s house .
