Morgiana filled her pot with oil from the last jar . She went back to the kitchen and lit the lamp . Then she took a very big pot , filled it with oil from the same jar and put it on the fire . When the oil was boiling , she carried it out into the yard . She poured some into each jar . In this way the thirty - seven robbers died , quickly and without a sound . Then Morgiana put out the fire and the lamp . She stood at the kitchen window in the dark and waited . A little later the captain woke up . Everything was dark and quiet . He opened his window and threw some small stones at the jars , but nobody came out . He threw more stones , a second time and a third time . Nothing happened . So he went down into the yard and walked to the first jar . “ Are you asleep ? ” he whispered . Then he smelt hot oil , and he understood everything . All his men were dead . Full of anger and fear , he broke the lock of the garden door and climbed over several walls . And so he escaped . Morgiana waited for a while , but the captain did not come back . She understood that he was gone . She was very happy , because the family was safe for tonight . At last she went to bed and fell asleep . VII . Morgiana’s Freedom Before sunrise , Ali Baba went to the baths with Abdallah . He knew nothing about the night . When he came back , he saw the jars in the yard and was surprised . “ Why hasn’t the merchant gone to the market ? ” he asked . “ Come and look inside this jar , ” said Morgiana . Ali Baba looked , saw a man and jumped back . “ Don’t be afraid , ” said Morgiana . “ He can’t hurt anybody now . He is dead . Look in the other jars too . ” Ali Baba looked inside all the jars without a word . Then he went to his room for his soup , and there Morgiana told him the whole story . She told him about the marks on the doors , the voices in the jars and the oil . The false merchant was the captain of the robbers , and he was still free . “ I owe you my life , ” said Ali Baba . “ From today you are free . You are not a slave any more . And this is only the beginning . ” That same day , Ali Baba and Abdallah dug a long , deep hole at the end of the garden , under the trees . There they buried the robbers in secret . Then they hid the jars and the weapons . Over the next days , they sold the mules at the market , a few at a time . Meanwhile , the captain was alone in his cave . He felt angry and ashamed , and the empty cave seemed terrible to him . “ My brave men ! ” he cried . “ What will I do without you ? That man knows our secret , and the treasure isn’t safe . First I must kill him . I couldn’t do it with all my men , so I will do it alone . ”
