The next day he put on very fine clothes and went to the town . He took a room at an inn and asked about the news . But nobody talked about dead robbers . “ Ali Baba knows how to keep a secret , ” he thought . “ Very well . I will work in secret too . ” He made many trips to the forest , and he brought fine silk and cloth from the cave to the town . Then he rented a shop . It was right opposite Cassim’s old shop , where Ali Baba’s son now worked . The captain said that his name was Cogia Hassan . He was very polite to the young man , and soon they became friends . One day Ali Baba came to visit his son , and the captain recognised him at once . After that , he was even kinder to the young man . He gave him presents and often invited him to dinner . VIII . The Guest Who Ate No Salt Ali Baba’s son wanted to invite his friend too , but his own house was very small . He told his father about it . “ Tomorrow is Friday , and the shops will be closed , ” said Ali Baba . “ Go for a walk with him in the afternoon . On the way back , bring him past my house and ask him in . I will ask Morgiana to cook a good supper . ” They did this . In front of the house , Cogia Hassan pretended that he did not want to go in . But really , this was exactly what he wanted . He wanted to get into Ali Baba’s house and kill him without any danger to himself . The young man took his hand and led him inside . Ali Baba welcomed him warmly and thanked him for his kindness to his son . They talked for a while . And I will go to the kitchen right now . There will be no salt in your supper . ” In the kitchen , Morgiana did not like this order at all . “ Who is this strange man who doesn’t eat salt ? ” she said . “ Now supper will be late . ” “ Do what I tell you , Morgiana , ” said Ali Baba . “ He is an honest man . ” Morgiana obeyed , but she wanted to see this man . She helped Abdallah to carry the dishes to the table . She looked at the guest carefully , and she recognised him . It was the false oil merchant , the captain of the robbers ! He wore different clothes , but it was him . And under his clothes she saw a dagger , a short , sharp knife . “ Now I understand why he won’t eat salt with my master , ” she thought . “ In our country , if a man eats salt at your table , he must never hurt you afterwards . And this man wants to kill my master . But I won’t let him . ”
