IX . The Dagger Dance During supper , Morgiana got everything ready . After the meal she served the fruit . She put a small table with wine and three cups near Ali Baba . Then she left the room with Abdallah , as if they were going to have their own supper . Cogia Hassan thought , “ Now is my chance . First I will give the father and the son a lot of wine . Then I will kill them both with my dagger and escape through the garden , like last time . ” But Morgiana did not go to supper . She put on a dancer’s dress and covered her face with a pretty mask . Round her waist she put a silver belt with a dagger in it . “ Take your drum , Abdallah , ” she said . “ Let’s go and entertain our master and his guest , as we sometimes do . ” Abdallah went into the room , playing his small drum , and Morgiana followed him . At the door she bowed low . “ Come in , Morgiana , come in , ” said Ali Baba . “ Let Cogia Hassan see what you can do . ” Then he turned to his guest . “ Sir , this is my slave Abdallah , and this is Morgiana , who looks after my house . I hope you like dancing . ” Cogia Hassan did not expect this at all , and he was not pleased . Now he had to wait for another chance . But he smiled and pretended to be happy . Morgiana danced beautifully . After several dances , she took out her dagger and danced with it in her hand . Sometimes she pointed it at the men , as if she wanted to strike . Sometimes she pointed it at her own heart . It all looked like part of the dance . At the end , out of breath , she took the drum from Abdallah . As dancers often did , she went round the room and held out the drum for money . Ali Baba put a gold coin in the drum , and his son did the same . Cogia Hassan saw that she was coming to him . He took out his purse to give her something . At that moment , Morgiana pushed her dagger into his heart , and the false merchant fell dead . “ Morgiana ! What have you done ? ” cried Ali Baba and his son . “ Do you want to destroy us all ? ” “ I did it to save you , master , not to destroy you , ” she answered . She opened the dead man’s clothes and showed them the hidden dagger . “ Look at his face carefully . This is the false oil merchant . He is the captain of the forty thieves ! That is why he would not eat salt with you . ” Now Ali Baba understood . Morgiana had saved his life for the second time . He took her in his arms . “ When I gave you your freedom , I said that it was only the beginning , ” he said . “ Now I can keep my word . I want you to marry my son . ”
