I . Down the Rabbit - Hole Alice was sitting on the river bank beside her older sister . It was a hot summer day , and she had nothing to do . Once or twice she looked at her sister’s book , but there were no pictures in it , and nobody in it ever talked . “ Who wants a book like that ? ” Alice thought . Then a White Rabbit with pink eyes hurried past her . “ Oh dear ! Oh dear ! I shall be late ! ” he said . At first Alice did not find this very strange . But then the Rabbit pulled a watch out of his waistcoat pocket , checked the time and ran on . Alice jumped up at once . A rabbit in a waistcoat , with a watch ! She raced across the field after him and saw him disappear down a big hole under the hedge . Alice followed him without stopping to think how she would ever get back . For a while the hole went along like a tunnel . Then , very suddenly , it dropped straight down , and Alice fell . She fell so slowly that she had time to look at everything . There were cupboards and bookshelves on the walls . As she passed one shelf , she took a jar from it . The label said “ ORANGE MARMALADE ” , but there was nothing inside . She put it back on another shelf as she went past . Down and down she went . “ I must be close to the centre of the earth by now , ” she said . “ Maybe I’ll come out on the other side , where people walk upside down ! ” Then she thought of Dinah , her cat . “ Dinah will miss me tonight . I wish she were here with me . There are no mice in the air , but she could catch a bat . Do cats eat bats , I wonder ? ” She was half asleep now , and soon she was asking , “ Do bats eat cats ? ” instead . She could not answer either question , so it did not really matter . Then , bump ! She landed on a pile of dry leaves and sticks . Ahead of her , the White Rabbit was hurrying along a passage . “ My ears and whiskers , it’s getting so late ! ” he cried , and he turned a corner . Alice ran after him , but when she reached the corner , he was gone . She was in a long , low hall with doors on every side . Every door was locked . In the middle stood a small glass table , and on it lay a tiny golden key . Alice tried it in every lock , but it was too small . Then , behind a curtain , she found one more door , a very little one , only as high as her knee . The key fitted ! She opened the door and knelt down . On the other side was the loveliest garden she had ever seen , full of flowers and fountains . But the doorway was too small even for her head . “ If only I could fold up like a telescope ! ” she said . She went back to the table . Now there was a little bottle on it , and she was sure it had not been there before . Tied to it was a label with two big words : “ DRINK ME ” .
