“ Change lobsters , and back to land again ! ” shouted the Gryphon . While they were talking , they both jumped about like mad things . Then they sat down again , very quiet and sad , and looked at Alice . “ It sounds like a lovely dance , ” said Alice shyly . “ Would you like to see a bit of it ? ” asked the Mock Turtle . “ We can do it without lobsters . ” So the two of them danced very seriously round and round Alice . Now and then they stepped on her toes . The Mock Turtle sang slowly and sadly as they danced . The song was about a fish called a whiting and a snail . The whiting asked the snail to walk a little faster and join the dance . But the snail said the sea was too far away , and he would not come . “ Thank you . It was a very interesting dance to watch , ” said Alice , glad that it was over . “ Now tell us about your adventures , ” said the Gryphon . “ I can tell you my adventures from this morning , ” said Alice . “ There’s no point going back to yesterday , because I was a different person then . ” So she told them everything since she first saw the White Rabbit . They listened with their eyes and mouths wide open . When she got to the poem that came out all wrong , the Mock Turtle took a long breath . “ That’s very curious , ” he said . Then the Gryphon asked for a song , and the Mock Turtle sighed and began to sing , in a voice full of sobs . It was a slow song about beautiful soup , rich and green , waiting hot in a bowl : “ Soup of the evening , beautiful soup ! ” Just then a cry came from far away : “ The trial’s beginning ! ” “ Come on ! ” cried the Gryphon . It took Alice by the hand and hurried away before the song was over . Behind them , fainter and fainter , came the sad voice of the Mock Turtle : “ Soup of the evening , beautiful soup ! ” XI . Who Stole the Tarts ? When they arrived , the King and Queen of Hearts were already on their thrones . Around them were birds , animals and all the other cards . In front of them stood the Knave of Hearts in chains , between two soldiers . Near the King stood the White Rabbit , holding a trumpet and a roll of paper . In the middle of the court stood a table with a big plate of tarts on it , and they made Alice feel very hungry . Alice had read about trials in books , so she knew that the King was the judge . He wore a big judge’s wig under his crown . On one side sat the jury : twelve animals and birds . A jury is a group of people who listen to a trial and decide if the prisoner is guilty . They were writing their names on slates , small boards for writing on , because they were afraid of forgetting them before the end .
