“ Treacle , ” said a sleepy voice behind her . It was the Dormouse . “ Seize that Dormouse ! ” screamed the Queen . “ Off with his head ! Throw him out ! Cut off his whiskers ! ” It took several minutes to get the Dormouse out . When everything was calm again , the cook had disappeared . “ Never mind ! ” said the King . He looked relieved . “ Call the next witness . ” To Alice’s great surprise , the White Rabbit then called out in his high little voice , “ Alice ! ” XII . Alice Speaks Up “ Here ! ” cried Alice . She had quite forgotten how big she had grown . She jumped up so quickly that her skirt knocked over the jury box . The whole jury fell out on top of the crowd and lay there with their legs in the air . “ Oh , I’m so sorry ! ” said Alice , and she quickly put them all back . In her hurry , she put the Lizard in upside down and had to turn him the right way up . “ What do you know about the tarts ? ” the King asked Alice . “ Nothing , ” said Alice . “ That’s very important , ” the King told the jury . “ Unimportant , Your Majesty means , ” whispered the White Rabbit . “ Yes , of course , unimportant , ” said the King . So some of the jury wrote down “ important ” , and some wrote “ unimportant ” . The King was busy writing in his notebook . Now he called out , “ Silence ! ” He read from the book : “ Rule Forty - two . All persons more than a mile high must leave the court . ” Everyone looked at Alice . “ I’m not a mile high , ” said Alice . “ You are , ” said the King . “ Nearly two miles , ” said the Queen . “ Well , I’m not going , ” said Alice . “ And that isn’t a real rule . You just made it up . ” “ It’s the oldest rule in the book , ” said the King . “ Then it should be Rule Number One , ” said Alice . The King went pale and shut his notebook quickly . “ Jury , what is your verdict ? ” he said in a weak voice . “ There’s more evidence , Your Majesty , ” said the White Rabbit , and he jumped up . “ Somebody has just found this paper . It looks like a letter from the Knave , but it’s a poem . And it isn’t in the Knave’s handwriting . ” Evidence is anything that helps to show what really happened . “ I didn’t write it , Your Majesty , ” said the Knave . “ There’s no name at the bottom , so nobody can prove it was me . ” “ No name ? That makes it worse , ” said the King . “ An honest man always signs his name . ” Everybody clapped , because this was the King’s first clever idea of the day . “ That proves he’s guilty ! ” said the Queen . “ It proves nothing ! ” said Alice . “ You don’t even know what the poem says ! ” “ Read it , ” said the King . The White Rabbit put on his glasses . “ Where shall I begin , Your Majesty ? ” “ Begin at the beginning , ” said the King very seriously , “ and go on till you come to the end : then stop . ” The court was silent while the Rabbit read the poem . It was full of “ he ” and “ she ” , “ they ” and “ you ” , but nobody could tell who was who . Somebody gave something to somebody , and then it all went back to somebody else . And it was all a great secret .
