Alice was a careful girl , so first she checked that the bottle did not say “ poison ” . It did not , so she took a sip . It tasted like cherry pie , pineapple , roast turkey , toffee and hot buttered toast , all mixed together . She drank it all . “ What a funny feeling ! ” said Alice . “ I’m folding up like a telescope ! ” Soon she was only ten inches tall , just right for the little door . But then she remembered the key . She had left it on the table , and now it was far above her head . She tried to climb a table leg , but it was too slippery , so she sat down on the floor and cried . “ Stop that at once ! ” she told herself sharply . “ Crying won’t help . ” Alice was good at giving herself advice , but not so good at taking it . Then she noticed a small glass box under the table . Inside was a tiny cake with the words “ EAT ME ” on top . The letters were made of currants , small dried fruits like raisins . “ All right , ” said Alice . “ If it makes me bigger , I can reach the key . If it makes me smaller , I can crawl under the door . Either way , I’ll get into that garden ! ” And she ate the whole cake . II . The Pool of Tears “ Curiouser and curiouser ! ” cried Alice . She was so surprised that she forgot her English . The right words are “ more and more curious ” . “ Now I’m opening out like the biggest telescope in the world ! Goodbye , feet ! ” Her feet were so far down that she could hardly see them . Then her head hit the ceiling . She was over nine feet tall ! She took the golden key and ran to the little door . But now she could only lie on the floor and look at the garden with one eye . She started to cry again , and she cried and cried . Soon her tears made a big pool that covered half the hall . After some time , the White Rabbit came back . He was dressed for a party , with white gloves in one hand and a fan in the other . “ The Duchess ! She’ll be so angry if I’m late ! ” he was saying to himself . “ Excuse me , sir . . . ” Alice began quietly . The Rabbit jumped high in the air , dropped the gloves and the fan , and ran off into the dark . The hall was hot , so Alice picked up the fan and fanned herself as she talked . “ Everything is so strange today ! Did I change in the night ? And if I’m not the same girl , then who am I ? I’m not Ada , because her hair is curly and mine is straight . And I can’t be Mabel , because Mabel knows almost nothing . Four times five is twelve , and four times six is thirteen . . . London is the capital of Paris . . . Oh no , that’s all wrong ! I must be Mabel ! ”
