Then she looked at her hands . While she was talking , she had put on one of the Rabbit’s tiny gloves ! She was getting small again , and it was the fan that was doing it ! She threw it down quickly , and she stopped shrinking just in time . She ran to the little door , but it was shut again , and the key was back on the glass table . Then her foot slipped , and splash ! She was up to her chin in salty water . At first she thought it was the sea . But it was her own pool of tears from the time when she was a giant . “ I wish I hadn’t cried so much ! ” she said as she swam about . Something was splashing nearby . It was a mouse , which had fallen in too . “ O Mouse , ” said Alice , “ do you know the way out of this pool ? ” The Mouse just looked at her . “ Perhaps it only speaks French , ” thought Alice . So she said the first sentence from her French book : “ Où est ma chatte ? ” That means “ Where is my cat ? ” The Mouse leapt out of the water and trembled all over . “ Oh , I’m sorry ! ” cried Alice . “ I forgot that you don’t like cats . ” “ Don’t like cats ! ” squeaked the Mouse . “ Would you like cats if you were a mouse ? ” “ Maybe not , ” said Alice . “ But you would like our Dinah . She’s so soft and sweet . She sits by the fire and washes her face , and she’s wonderful at catching mice . . . Oh , I’m sorry again ! ” The Mouse’s fur was standing on end . “ My family has always hated cats ! ” it said . “ Never say that word again ! ” “ I won’t ! ” said Alice . “ Do you like . . . dogs ? There’s a little dog near our house that catches all the rats . . . Oh dear ! ” The Mouse was already swimming away as fast as it could . “ Please come back , dear Mouse ! ” Alice called . “ We won’t talk about cats or dogs ! ” Slowly the Mouse swam back . “ Let’s get out of the water , ” it said . “ Then I’ll tell you my story , and you’ll see why I hate them . ” By now the pool was crowded with birds and animals that had fallen in . There was a Duck and a Dodo , a Lory , which is a kind of parrot , and an Eaglet , which is a young eagle . Alice swam ahead , and they all followed her to the shore . III . A Race and a Long Tale On the bank , everyone was wet , cold and cross , and nobody knew how to get dry . At last the Mouse called out , “ Sit down , everyone , and listen ! I’ll get you dry in no time ! ” They all sat in a big circle around it . “ Ahem ! ” said the Mouse . “ This is the driest thing I know . ” A boring story is called “ dry ” in English , and the Mouse hoped this one would dry them . “ William the Conqueror came to England , and the English soon accepted him as their king . . . ” It went on and on about kings and lords and battles . Then it stopped . “ How do you feel now , my dear ? ” it asked Alice . “ Just as wet , ” said Alice sadly . “ Your history isn’t drying me at all . ”
