IV . The Rabbit Sends in Bill It was not the Mouse . It was the White Rabbit , walking slowly and looking everywhere . “ The Duchess ! The Duchess ! Oh , my paws and whiskers ! She’ll have my head cut off ! Where did I drop them ? ” He meant the fan and the gloves , Alice guessed . But they were gone , and so were the big hall , the glass table and the little door . Then the Rabbit saw Alice . “ Mary Ann ! What are you doing out here ? ” he shouted angrily . “ Run home at once and fetch me some gloves and a fan ! Hurry ! ” “ He thinks I’m his maid , ” Alice said to herself as she ran off . Soon she came to a neat little house with a shiny sign on the door : “ W . RABBIT ” . She went in without knocking and ran upstairs . In a small bedroom she found a fan and some tiny white gloves . There was also a little bottle next to the mirror . It did not say “ DRINK ME ” , but Alice drank from it anyway . “ Something always happens when I eat or drink here , ” she thought . “ I hope this makes me big again . ” It worked much too well . Before she had drunk half of it , her head was touching the ceiling . Soon she had to lie on the floor , with one elbow against the door . Then she had to put one arm out of the window and one foot up the chimney . “ Now I can’t do anything more , ” she said . “ What will happen to me ? ” Luckily , she stopped growing then . “ It was much nicer at home , ” thought poor Alice . “ Mice and rabbits didn’t give me orders there . Still , someone should write a book about me ! When I grow up , I’ll write one myself . ” Then she heard the Rabbit outside . “ Mary Ann ! Bring me my gloves this minute ! ” He tried to open the door , but Alice’s elbow was in the way . “ Then I’ll climb in through the window , ” he said . “ No , you won’t ! ” thought Alice . When she heard him under the window , she opened her hand and grabbed at the air . There was a little scream , a fall and the sound of breaking glass . Perhaps he had fallen into a glass box for growing cucumbers . Then she heard the Rabbit call to someone . “ Pat ! What’s that in the window ? ” “ Why , it’s an arm , sir . ” “ An arm , you fool ! It fills the whole window ! Go and take it away ! ” Alice grabbed at the air again . This time there were two little screams and more broken glass . Then she heard a cart arriving and lots of voices . Nobody wanted to go down the chimney , so at last they sent Bill , a little lizard . Alice waited until she heard something small scratching its way down the chimney . Then she gave it a good hard kick . “ There goes Bill ! ” shouted everyone outside . After a while a weak little voice said , “ I don’t know what happened . Something hit me from below like a jack - in - the - box , and up I flew like a rocket ! ”
