“ We’ll have to burn the house down ! ” said the Rabbit . “ If you do , ” shouted Alice as loudly as she could , “ I’ll send Dinah after you ! ” Everything went quiet . Then a shower of little stones came in through the window . As they landed on the floor , they turned into little cakes . “ If I eat one , my size will change , ” thought Alice . “ I can’t get any bigger , so it will have to make me smaller . ” She ate a cake and at once began to shrink . When she was small enough , she ran out of the door . A crowd of little animals was waiting outside , with poor Bill in the middle . Alice ran past them into a thick wood . Suddenly a huge puppy looked down at her with big round eyes . Alice was very frightened , because it might be hungry . She picked up a small stick and held it out . The puppy barked with joy and jumped at the stick . It was like playing with a horse . When at last it lay down to rest , Alice ran off . “ I must eat or drink something to grow again , ” she thought . “ But what ? ” Near her stood a big mushroom , as tall as she was . She stood on tiptoe and looked over the top . There sat a large blue caterpillar with its arms folded , smoking a long pipe . It took no notice of her at all . V . Advice from a Caterpillar For a long time neither of them spoke . Then the Caterpillar took the pipe out of its mouth . “ Who are you ? ” it asked in a slow , sleepy voice . “ I . . . I don’t really know , sir , just now , ” said Alice shyly . “ I knew who I was when I got up this morning . But I’ve changed several times since then . ” “ What do you mean ? ” said the Caterpillar . “ Explain yourself ! ” “ I can’t explain myself , sir , ” said Alice , “ because I’m not myself , you see . It’s very confusing to be so many sizes in one day . ” “ It isn’t , ” said the Caterpillar . “ Maybe not for you yet , ” said Alice . “ But one day you’ll turn into a butterfly . Won’t that feel a bit strange ? ” “ Not at all , ” said the Caterpillar . “ So , who are you ? ” They were back at the beginning . Alice got tired of the short answers and turned to go . “ Come back ! ” called the Caterpillar . “ I have something important to tell you ! ” Alice came back . “ Keep your temper , ” said the Caterpillar . “ Is that all ? ” asked Alice , trying hard not to get angry . “ No , ” said the Caterpillar . After a few more minutes of smoking , it asked , “ So you think you’ve changed ? ” “ I’m afraid so , sir . I can’t even remember my poems properly . ” “ Say ‘ You Are Old , Father William ’ , ” said the Caterpillar . Alice folded her hands and began . In the poem , a young man asked his old father a lot of questions . Why did he stand on his head at his age ? How could he eat a whole goose , bones and all ? But again , the words came out all wrong .
