Alice caught the baby as well as she could . “ If I leave it here , they’ll kill it , ” she thought , and she carried it outside . Soon the baby started to grunt . “ Don’t grunt , ” said Alice . She looked at its face carefully . Its nose turned up a lot , and its eyes were very small . When it grunted again , there was no doubt about it . It was a pig ! So Alice put it down , and it trotted happily away into the wood . “ It would have grown into a very ugly child , ” she said to herself . “ But it makes quite a handsome pig . ” Then she saw the Cheshire Cat grinning on a branch . It looked friendly , but it had long claws and a lot of teeth , so Alice was very polite . “ Cheshire Cat , ” she began , “ could you tell me , please , which way I should go from here ? ” “ That depends on where you want to get to , ” said the Cat . “ I don’t really mind where , ” said Alice , “ as long as I get somewhere . ” “ Oh , you’ll do that , ” said the Cat , “ if you walk far enough . ” It waved one paw . “ That way lives a Hatter . ” It waved the other paw . “ And that way lives a March Hare . Visit whichever you like . They’re both mad . ” “ But I don’t want to be with mad people , ” said Alice . “ You can’t help that , ” said the Cat . “ We’re all mad here . I’m mad . You’re mad . ” “ How do you know I’m mad ? ” asked Alice . “ You must be , ” said the Cat , “ or you wouldn’t have come here . Are you playing croquet with the Queen today ? ” “ I’d like to , but nobody has invited me , ” said Alice . “ You’ll see me there , ” said the Cat , and it vanished . A moment later it was back . “ By the way , what happened to the baby ? ” “ It turned into a pig , ” said Alice . “ I thought it would , ” said the Cat , and it vanished again . Alice set off towards the March Hare’s house . But soon the Cat appeared again on another branch . “ Please don’t keep appearing and disappearing so suddenly , ” said Alice . “ It makes me dizzy ! ” “ All right , ” said the Cat . This time it faded away very slowly . First the end of its tail disappeared , and last of all the grin . The grin stayed in the air for some time after the rest had gone . “ Well ! ” thought Alice . “ I’ve often seen a cat without a grin . But I’ve never seen a grin without a cat ! ” Soon she reached the March Hare’s house . The chimneys were shaped like ears , and the roof was covered in fur . Alice ate a bit more mushroom , and when she was about two feet tall , she walked up to it . VII . A Mad Tea - Party A table stood under a tree in front of the house . The March Hare and the Hatter were having tea there . A hatter is a man who makes hats . Between them sat a Dormouse , a small animal like a mouse that sleeps a lot . It was fast asleep . The two friends were leaning their elbows on it as if it were a cushion . The table was very long , but all three were squeezed together at one corner . “ No room ! No room ! ” they shouted when they saw Alice .
