“ But why did they live in a well ? ” asked Alice . “ It was a treacle well , ” said the Dormouse . “ There’s no such thing ! ” said Alice angrily . But the Dormouse went on . “ The three sisters were learning to draw . They drew all kinds of things , but only things that begin with M : mousetraps , the moon , memory . . . ” “ A picture of memory ? ” said Alice , very confused . “ Well , I don’t think . . . ” “ Then you shouldn’t talk , ” said the Hatter . This was too rude for Alice . She stood up and walked away . When she looked back , the Hatter and the March Hare were trying to push the Dormouse into the teapot . “ I’ll never go there again ! ” said Alice . “ It was the silliest tea - party of my whole life ! ” Just then she saw a tree with a door in it . Everything was strange today , so she went in . And there she was again , in the long hall next to the glass table . This time she did things in the right order . First she took the golden key and unlocked the little door . Then she nibbled the piece of mushroom from her pocket until she was about a foot tall . She went through the little door , and at last she was in the beautiful garden , among the bright flowers and cool fountains . VIII . The Queen’s Croquet Game Near the entrance stood a big rose tree covered in white roses . Three gardeners were busy painting the roses red . The gardeners were not people but playing cards , flat and thin , with hands and feet at the corners . “ Excuse me , ” said Alice . “ Why are you painting the roses ? ” One of them , called Two , answered in a low voice . “ Well , miss , the Queen wanted a red rose tree , and we planted a white one by mistake . If she finds out , she’ll have our heads cut off ! ” Just then Five , another gardener , shouted , “ The Queen ! The Queen ! ” All three threw themselves flat on their faces . A long parade came into the garden : soldiers , lords and ladies , the royal children and many guests . The White Rabbit was among them , talking nervously . Next came the Knave of Hearts , carrying the King’s crown on a red cushion . A knave is the card that is also called the Jack . Last of all came the King and Queen of Hearts . Alice did not lie down . What was the point of a parade if nobody could see it ? The Queen stopped in front of her and looked at her coldly . “ What’s your name , child ? ” “ I’m Alice , Your Majesty , ” she answered politely . But she thought , “ They’re just playing cards . Why should I be afraid of them ? ” “ And who are these ? ” asked the Queen , pointing at the gardeners . They were lying face down , and all cards look the same from the back . “ I don’t know , ” said Alice bravely . “ It’s nothing to do with me . ” The Queen went red with fury . “ Off with her head ! ” she screamed . “ Nonsense ! ” said Alice loudly , and the Queen was quiet .
