Then Pinocchio swam on along the coast . Suddenly he felt himself rise into the air . He was in a net , with lots of fish ! A very strange fisherman came out of a cave . He was all green : his hair , his beard , his skin and even his eyes . He pulled the net into his cave , where a big pan of oil was on the fire . Then he took the fish out one by one . When he took out Pinocchio , he was very surprised . “ What kind of fish is this ? ” “ I’m not a fish ! I’m a puppet ! ” “ A puppet fish ? Even better ! I’ll fry you with the others . ” Pinocchio cried and shouted , but the green man covered him in flour like the other fish . He was just about to throw him into the pan when a big dog came into the cave . The smell of frying fish had brought him there . “ Save me , Alidoro ! ” shouted Pinocchio . The dog knew his friend’s voice at once . He picked up the puppet gently in his teeth and ran out of the cave like lightning . “ How can I ever thank you ? ” said Pinocchio , when they were far away . “ You don’t need to , ” said Alidoro . “ You saved me , and now I’ve saved you . In this world we must all help one another . ” Later Pinocchio met an old man , who told him that Eugene was alive and had gone home . “ A boy called Pinocchio threw a book at him , ” he said . “ They say he’s a very bad boy . ” “ That’s not true ! ” said Pinocchio . “ Pinocchio is a very good boy , and he always obeys his father . ” But as he said this , his nose grew longer than a hand . “ No , sorry , ” he said quickly . “ Pinocchio really is a bad boy . ” And his nose became small again . That night Pinocchio went back to the Fairy’s house , very ashamed . “ I forgive you once more , ” the Fairy said . “ But if you do it again , you’ll be sorry ! ” From that day Pinocchio studied hard and behaved well for a whole year . In the exams he was the best in the school . Then the Fairy said to him , “ Tomorrow , at last , you’ll stop being a wooden puppet , and you’ll become a real boy . ” What joy ! The Fairy planned a party for the next day , with two hundred cups of coffee with milk and four hundred bread rolls with butter on both sides . But in the life of puppets there is always a “ but ” . X . The Land of Toys The Fairy let Pinocchio go out and invite his friends to the party . “ But come home before dark , ” she said . “ I’ll be back in an hour , ” promised Pinocchio . “ Be careful , Pinocchio . Children are very quick to promise and very slow to keep their promises . ” “ I’m not like other children . When I say something , I do it . ” In a little more than an hour , Pinocchio invited all his friends . Only one was missing , the friend he liked best . His real name was Romeo , but everyone called him Candlewick , because he was thin and dry like the string in a candle . He was the laziest boy in the school . At last Pinocchio found him hiding by the door of a farmer’s house .
