XI . Donkey Ears As you know , Geppetto forgot to give Pinocchio ears . But that morning Pinocchio found that he had ears now , and they were longer than his hand ! He looked at himself in a bowl of water . He had two big , hairy donkey ears ! When Pinocchio began to cry and shout , a Marmot came down from upstairs . A marmot is a small , furry animal . She held his wrist with her paw and sighed . “ I’m sorry , my friend . You have donkey fever . In two or three hours you won’t be a puppet or a boy any more . You’ll be a real donkey . That’s what happens to children who hate books and spend all their days playing . ” “ It’s my own fault , ” cried Pinocchio . “ I left my good Fairy , who loved me like a mother . With her , I’d be a real boy today ! ” Pinocchio was ashamed of his ears , so he put on a big cotton hat and pulled it down to his nose . Then he went to find Candlewick . His friend was wearing a big cotton hat too , pulled down to his nose ! The two friends looked at each other without a word . At last Pinocchio said , “ Let’s take our hats off at the same time . One , two , three ! ” At “ three ” , they both threw their hats into the air . Each boy saw the other’s donkey ears . But instead of feeling sad , they began to laugh . They laughed so much that their sides hurt . Suddenly Candlewick went pale . “ Help , Pinocchio ! I can’t stand up ! ” “ Nor can I ! ” cried Pinocchio . They both fell on all fours and began to run round the room . Their arms turned into legs , their faces grew long , and grey hair covered their backs . Last of all , they grew tails ! They tried to cry , but only donkey sounds came out : “ Hee - haw , hee - haw ! ” At that moment someone kicked the door open . It was the little man from the coach . “ Well done , boys ! I knew it was you from your voices , ” he said with his usual smile . And he took them to the market to sell them . Now , my little readers , you know what that little man’s job was . He travelled around the world and took away children who did not want to study . When they turned into donkeys , he sold them . That was how he became rich . A farmer bought Candlewick . The owner of a circus bought Pinocchio . He wanted to teach him to jump and dance . What a hard life began for him ! He got straw and hay to eat , and if he did not like it , he got the whip . For three months he learned to dance , to walk on his back legs and to jump through a hoop , a big ring . At last the night of the big show came . The poster said : THE FAMOUS DONKEY PINOCCHIO , STAR OF THE DANCE .
