Pinocchio danced and jumped , and the crowd clapped wildly . Then he saw a lovely lady in one of the best seats . She wore a gold chain round her neck , and on it was a small picture of a wooden puppet . “ That puppet is me , and that lady is the Fairy ! ” thought Pinocchio . He wanted to shout , “ My Fairy ! ” But only a long “ Hee - haw ! ” came out , and everyone laughed . When Pinocchio looked up again , the lady was gone . His eyes filled with tears , but nobody noticed . “ Now , Pinocchio , jump through the hoop ! ” shouted the owner . Pinocchio jumped , but his back legs caught in the hoop , and he fell badly . When he got up , he could only walk slowly on one bad leg . “ What use is a donkey that can’t walk properly ? ” said the owner . “ Sell him ! ” At the market a man bought him for twenty pennies . “ I want him for his skin , because it’s very hard , ” he said . “ I’m going to make a drum from it for the band in my village . ” Imagine how poor Pinocchio felt ! The man took him to a rock by the sea . He tied a stone round his neck and a rope to one of his legs . Then he pushed him into the water . He wanted to leave him there until the donkey drowned , and then take his skin . XII . A Real Boy Fifty minutes later , the man pulled the rope . “ My donkey must have drowned by now , ” he thought . But instead of a dead donkey , out came a living wooden puppet , moving about like a fish ! “ Where’s my donkey ? ” shouted the man . “ I’m your donkey ! ” said Pinocchio , laughing . “ Lots of fish came , and I think the Fairy sent them . They ate all the donkey skin , but they didn’t like the wood ! ” And he jumped back into the sea . “ Goodbye , sir ! ” he shouted . “ If you ever need a skin for a drum , remember me ! ” Pinocchio swam happily out to sea . Soon he saw a little goat on a white rock , with wool as blue as the Fairy’s hair . She was calling him , and he swam towards her as fast as he could . “ Quick , Pinocchio ! ” cried the goat . “ The Dogfish is coming ! ” Pinocchio turned and saw an enormous mouth , open like a tunnel . He had almost reached the rock when the Dogfish swallowed him as easily as you drink a raw egg . Inside the Dogfish it was as black as ink . A Tuna was there too . “ All we can do is wait for the end , ” said the Tuna calmly . “ For a tuna , it’s better to die in the water than in a tin with oil . ” “ Well , I want to escape ! ” said Pinocchio . Then he saw a small light far away , and he walked towards it . It was a candle on a little table . At the table sat an old man , all white , as if he were made of snow . “ Father ! My dear father ! At last I’ve found you ! I’ll never leave you again ! ” “ Is it really you , my dear Pinocchio ? ” They hugged and cried for joy . Geppetto had lived inside the Dogfish for two years , on food from a ship that the Dogfish had also eaten . But now the food was almost gone , and this candle was his last one .
