When the puppet could walk , he ran out of the door and down the street . “ Stop him ! ” shouted Geppetto , but people only laughed . Luckily , a police officer was standing in the road , and he caught Pinocchio by his long nose . Geppetto wanted to pull the puppet’s ears , but he could not find any . In his hurry , he had forgotten to make them ! “ Come home , ” he said . “ We’ll have a talk there , you and I . ” When Pinocchio heard this , he threw himself on the ground and would not walk . A crowd came , and people began to say , “ Poor little puppet ! Who knows what that old man will do to him at home ! ” In the end the officer let Pinocchio go and took poor Geppetto to prison instead . The old man cried all the way . “ Bad son ! I worked so hard to make a good puppet ! But it serves me right . I should have thought of that before ! ” II . The Talking Cricket Pinocchio ran across the fields all the way home . He shut the door and sat down , very pleased with himself . But then he heard a sound in the room : “ Cri - cri - cri ! ” It was a cricket , a small insect that sings , and he was climbing slowly up the wall . “ I’m the Talking Cricket , ” he said , “ and I have lived in this room for more than a hundred years . Children who don’t obey their parents and run away from home will never be happy . ” “ Tomorrow morning I’m leaving , ” said Pinocchio . “ If I stay , they’ll send me to school , and I don’t want to study . ” “ Poor little fool ! Then you’ll grow up to be a big donkey . If you don’t like school , learn a trade . ” “ There’s only one job in the world that I like . It’s eating , drinking , sleeping and playing from morning till night . ” “ People with that job nearly always end up in hospital or in prison . Poor Pinocchio ! You are a puppet , and worse , you have a wooden head . ” At these words Pinocchio jumped up angrily . He threw a wooden hammer at the Cricket . Perhaps he did not mean to hit him , but the hammer hit the Cricket right on the head . The poor Cricket had no breath left for one last “ cri - cri - cri ” . He stayed there on the wall , and he never moved again . Night came , and Pinocchio felt terribly hungry . He ran to the pot on the fire , but of course it was only painted . There was no food anywhere . “ The Cricket was right , ” he said , crying . “ I was wrong to run away from home . ” Then he saw something round and white in the rubbish . It was an egg ! He was going to fry it , but when he broke the shell , out came a little chick . “ Thank you so much , Mr Pinocchio , for saving me the work of breaking my shell , ” it said politely . “ Goodbye , and give my love to your family ! ” And it flew out of the window .
