So Pinocchio went out into the cold , stormy night to ask for some bread . He rang the bell of a house , and an old man in a nightcap looked out of a window . “ Stand under the window ! ” he shouted . Then a whole bucket of cold water came down on Pinocchio’s head . He went home wet and very tired . There was a little stove full of hot coals , so he put his feet on it to dry them . Then he fell asleep . While he was sleeping , his wooden feet caught fire and slowly burned away . At sunrise someone knocked at the door . “ It’s me ! ” said a voice . It was Geppetto . The police had let him go . Pinocchio tried to run to the door , but he fell flat on the floor . He had no feet ! So Geppetto climbed in through the window . When he saw his son like this , he forgot his anger and kissed him . Then he took three pears out of his pocket . “ These were for my breakfast , ” he said , “ but you can have them . ” “ Peel them for me , please . I don’t like the skin . ” Geppetto peeled the pears , but he kept the skins and the hard middles . “ In this world , everything can be useful , ” he said . Pinocchio ate the three pears in a moment . He was still hungry , so in the end he ate the skins and the middles too . Then Pinocchio began to cry , because he wanted new feet . “ I promise I’ll be good from today , ” he said . “ I’ll go to school and study hard . I’m the best boy in the world , and I always tell the truth ! ” Geppetto’s eyes were full of tears . In less than an hour he made two new feet . Then he made the puppet a suit of paper with flowers on it , a pair of shoes made of tree bark and a little hat made of soft bread . “ I need a spelling book for school , ” said Pinocchio . But they had no money to buy one . So Geppetto put on his old coat , which was full of patches , and went out . Soon he came back with a spelling book , but without his coat . Outside , it was snowing . “ Where’s your coat , Father ? ” “ I sold it . ” “ Why ? ” “ Because it made me too warm . ” Pinocchio understood at once . He threw his arms round his father’s neck and covered his face with kisses . III . The Puppet Theatre When the snow stopped , Pinocchio set off for school with his new spelling book under his arm . On the way he was thinking : “ I’ll learn to read and write . Then I’ll earn lots of money and buy my father a fine new coat . ” Suddenly he heard music in the distance : fee - fee - fee , boom - boom - boom . “ Today I’ll go and hear the music , and tomorrow I’ll go to school , ” he thought . “ There’s always time for school . ” He followed the music to a square , where there was a big wooden theatre . A boy read the sign to him : GREAT PUPPET THEATRE . A ticket cost four pennies .
