Pinocchio climbed up the long beard like a squirrel and kissed him on the end of his nose . That night Fire - eater ate his sheep half cooked , and the puppets danced for joy until morning . The next day Fire - eater called Pinocchio . “ What does your father do ? ” “ He’s poor . That’s his job . He had to sell his only coat to buy me a spelling book . ” “ Poor man ! Here are five gold coins . Take them to him with my best wishes . ” Pinocchio thanked him a thousand times , hugged all the puppets and set off happily for home . IV . The Fox and the Cat On the way home Pinocchio met a Fox and a Cat . The Fox had a bad leg , and the Cat was blind . The Fox leaned on the Cat , and the Cat let the Fox lead the way . “ Good morning , Pinocchio , ” said the Fox politely . “ I saw your father yesterday . He was in his shirt , shaking with cold . ” “ Poor Father ! But from today he won’t be cold any more , because now I’m rich . ” And he showed them the five gold coins . When the Fox heard the sound of the gold , he forgot about his bad leg and stretched it out . The Cat opened both eyes wide , and they shone like two green lamps . But he quickly shut them again , and Pinocchio saw nothing . “ And what are you going to do with all that money ? ” asked the Fox . “ I’m going to buy my father a new coat , and I’m going to buy a spelling book for myself . I want to go to school and study hard . ” “ Look at us ! ” said the Fox . “ We studied too much , and that’s how I hurt my leg and my friend lost his eyes . ” Just then a white blackbird in a bush began to sing : “ Pinocchio , don’t listen to bad friends , or you’ll be sorry ! ” Poor bird ! The Cat jumped on it and ate it in one bite , feathers and all . Then he closed his eyes again and went on acting blind . After a while the Fox stopped . “ Would you like your five coins to become two thousand ? ” he asked . “ Not far from here there is a magic field . Everyone calls it the Field of Miracles . You plant a gold coin there and water it . In the night the coin grows , and in the morning you find a tree full of gold coins . ” “ How wonderful ! ” cried Pinocchio , and he danced for joy . “ When I have all those coins , I’ll give you five hundred as a present . ” “ A present ? Not at all ! ” said the Fox . He sounded hurt . “ We don’t work for money . We work only to make other people rich . ” “ Other people ! ” said the Cat . “ What good people they are ! ” thought Pinocchio . In a moment he forgot his father , the new coat and the spelling book . “ Let’s go , ” he said . “ I’ll come with you . ” They walked all day . In the evening they came , very tired , to an inn called the Red Crayfish . The two friends said they were not hungry at all . But the Cat ate thirty - five fish with tomato sauce , and the Fox ate a hare and several chickens . Pinocchio could only think about his golden tree .
