After dinner Pinocchio went to bed . At midnight the owner of the inn woke him up . “ Where are my friends ? ” asked Pinocchio . “ They left two hours ago . They’ll wait for you at sunrise at the Field of Miracles . ” “ Did they pay for their dinner ? ” “ Pay ? Oh no . They’re much too polite for that . They didn’t want to take that pleasure away from you . ” Pinocchio paid with one of his gold coins and left . In the dark he saw a tiny insect on a tree , shining with a pale light . “ Who are you ? ” he asked . “ I’m the ghost of the Talking Cricket , ” said the insect in a very weak voice . “ Go home and take your four coins to your poor father . Don’t trust people who promise to make you rich in one night . ” “ I want to go on . ” “ Children who always do what they want will be sorry sooner or later . ” “ The same old story . Good night , Cricket . ” “ Good night , Pinocchio . And may heaven keep you safe from robbers . ” The little light went out , and the road was darker than before . V . The Fairy with Blue Hair “ Robbers ! I don’t believe in robbers , ” Pinocchio said to himself . “ Fathers invent them to stop their children going out at night . ” But just then he heard a noise behind him . In the dark he saw two black shapes wrapped in old coal sacks . They were running after him like two ghosts . Pinocchio quickly hid his four coins under his tongue . “ Your money or your life ! ” said the robbers , and they caught him by the arms . Pinocchio could not speak , so he shook his head to show that he had no money . “ Give us the money , ” said the tall robber , “ or we’ll go after your father too ! ” “ No , not my father ! ” cried Pinocchio , and the coins rang in his mouth . “ Aha , you little cheat ! The money is under your tongue ! ” Pinocchio shut his mouth tight . The smaller robber tried to open it with a knife . Quick as lightning , Pinocchio bit the robber’s hand right off . When he spat it out , he saw that it was not a hand at all . It was a cat’s paw ! Pinocchio escaped and ran all night , with the robbers behind him . At dawn he saw a little white house among the trees . He knocked at the door again and again . At last a lovely little girl looked out of the window . She had blue hair , and her face was as white as wax . Without moving her lips , she said , “ There’s no one in this house . They are all dead . ” “ Then you open the door , at least ! ” cried Pinocchio . “ I’m dead too . ” And the girl closed the window without a sound . At that moment the robbers caught Pinocchio . They could not make him open his mouth , so they tied a rope round his neck and hung him from a branch of a great tree , the Big Oak . “ We’ll come back tomorrow , ” they said . “ Then your mouth will be open . ” And they went away .
