Now his nose could not get through the door , and Pinocchio cried for half an hour . At last the Fairy felt sorry for him . She clapped her hands , and a thousand woodpeckers flew in through the window . These birds pecked at his nose until it was short again . “ How good you are , my Fairy ! ” said Pinocchio . “ If you want to stay with me , you can be my little brother , ” she answered . “ I have already sent for your father . He’ll be here tonight . ” Pinocchio was wild with joy . He ran off into the wood to meet his father on the road . VI . The Field of Miracles Near the Big Oak , Pinocchio met the Fox and the Cat again . “ Here’s our dear Pinocchio ! ” cried the Fox , and he hugged him . Pinocchio told them about the robbers . As he talked , he noticed that the Cat had only three paws . “ What happened to your paw ? ” he asked . The Cat did not know what to say , so the Fox answered for him . “ My friend is too modest to tell you . An hour ago we met an old wolf that was almost dying of hunger . So my friend bit off his own paw and gave it to him for his dinner . ” “ If all cats were like you , the mice would be very lucky ! ” Pinocchio said to the Cat . “ And your coins ? ” asked the Fox . “ Tomorrow they could be two thousand ! Come and plant them today . After today it will be too late , because a rich lord has bought the Field of Miracles . ” Pinocchio thought of the Fairy and his father . But in the end he did what all boys with no sense do . “ Let’s go , ” he said . “ I’ll come with you . ” After half a day’s walk they came to a town called Catchfools . In the streets there were hungry dogs with no hair , cold sheep with no wool and butterflies that had sold their wings . Near the town there was a field that looked like every other field . “ Here we are , ” said the Fox . “ Dig a hole and put your coins in it . ” Pinocchio dug a hole , put the four coins in it and covered them with earth . Then he watered the ground , using his shoe as a bucket . “ Now go to the town and come back in twenty minutes , ” said the Fox . “ You’ll find a tree with its branches covered in gold coins . ” And the two friends left . In the town Pinocchio counted the minutes one by one . Then he ran back to the field . “ What if I find a hundred thousand coins ? ” he thought . “ I’ll buy a palace , a thousand wooden horses and a library full of cakes ! ” But in the field there was no tree of coins . Then he heard a loud laugh . On a tree nearby sat a big Parrot with very few feathers . “ What are you laughing at ? ” asked Pinocchio angrily .
