“ I’m laughing at fools who believe everything they hear , ” said the Parrot . “ I’m laughing at you , because you think money grows like pumpkins . But you must earn money with your hands or your head . While you were in town , the Fox and the Cat came back here . They dug up your coins and ran away like the wind . ” Pinocchio dug a huge hole with his hands . But the coins were not there . So he ran to the court to tell the judge . The judge was an old Gorilla with a white beard and gold glasses without any glass in them . He listened carefully and felt very sorry for Pinocchio . Then he rang a bell , and two dogs dressed as police officers came in . “ Someone stole four gold coins from this poor puppet , ” said the judge . “ So take him to prison at once . ” And so Pinocchio spent four months in prison . Then one day the young Emperor of Catchfools won a great battle . To show his joy , he opened the prison and let all the thieves go free . “ If the others are going out , I want to go out too , ” Pinocchio said to the guard . “ Not you . You aren’t a thief . ” “ Excuse me , but I am a thief too . ” “ Oh , in that case you’re quite right , ” said the guard . He took off his hat politely and let him go . VII . The Snake and the Watchdog Pinocchio left the town at once and ran along the muddy road back to the Fairy’s house . Suddenly he stopped and took four steps back . A big Snake was lying across the road . It had green skin and eyes of fire , and the end of its tail was smoking like a chimney . Pinocchio sat down far away and waited for the Snake to leave . He waited one hour , two hours , three hours , but it did not move . At last he walked up to the Snake and said in a small , sweet voice , “ Excuse me , Mr Snake . Would you please move a little to one side and let me pass ? My father is waiting for me at home . ” The Snake did not answer . Its eyes closed , and its tail stopped smoking . “ Maybe it’s really dead ! ” said Pinocchio happily . He lifted his leg to step over it . But the Snake suddenly rose up like a spring . Pinocchio jumped back in fear and fell over . He fell so badly that his head got stuck in the mud , and his legs were kicking in the air . When the Snake saw the puppet upside down , it began to laugh . It laughed and laughed and could not stop . It laughed so hard that something broke inside it , and this time it really was dead . Pinocchio pulled his head out of the mud and ran on . Soon he was terribly hungry , so he jumped into a field to pick a few grapes . Crack ! Two sharp pieces of iron closed round his legs . It was a trap . Some farmers had put it there to catch martens , small wild animals that were eating all their chickens . Pinocchio cried and shouted , but nobody came . At night a glow - worm , a little insect that shines in the dark , flew past . Pinocchio told her about the grapes .
