“ Were the grapes yours ? ” she asked . “ No , but I was hungry . ” “ Being hungry isn’t a good reason to take what isn’t ours . ” “ That’s true , ” said Pinocchio , crying . “ I won’t do it again . ” Just then a farmer came with a lamp . “ So you’re the thief who takes my chickens ! ” he shouted . “ No , no ! I only wanted a few grapes ! ” “ Someone who steals grapes will steal chickens too . ” He took Pinocchio home and put a dog’s collar round his neck , with a long chain to the wall . “ This morning my old dog died , ” he said . “ Tonight you’ll be my watchdog . If thieves come , bark . ” Then he went to bed . Poor Pinocchio stayed outside , cold and hungry . “ It serves me right , ” he said , crying . Then he crept into the dog’s little wooden house and fell asleep . Around midnight some little voices woke him . There were four martens outside . One of them came up to the dog’s house . “ Good evening , Melampo . ” “ I’m not Melampo . I’m Pinocchio . Melampo was the old dog , and he died this morning . ” “ Oh , poor thing ! Well , we’ll make you the same deal that we had with him . We’ll come once a week and take eight chickens . Seven are for us , and one is for you . You only have to pretend to sleep and not bark . ” “ All right , ” said Pinocchio . But he had a different plan . When the four martens went into the chicken house , Pinocchio quickly shut the door behind them and put a big stone in front of it . Then he began to bark just like a real dog : “ Woof , woof , woof ! ” The farmer ran out and found the four thieves . He was very pleased , and he asked Pinocchio how he caught them . Pinocchio did not tell him about Melampo’s deal , because he thought , “ The dead are dead . It’s better to leave them in peace . ” So he only told the farmer that the martens had offered him a chicken if he did not bark . “ Well done , my boy ! You’re an honest lad , ” said the farmer . “ From now on you’re free . ” And he took off the dog’s collar . VIII . The Island of Busy Bees Pinocchio ran all the way to the Fairy’s house . But the little white house was not there any more . In its place there was a small stone with these sad words on it : HERE LIES THE GIRL WITH BLUE HAIR , WHO DIED OF SORROW BECAUSE HER LITTLE BROTHER PINOCCHIO LEFT HER . Pinocchio fell on the ground and cried all night . “ Oh , my little Fairy ! Why did you die , and not me ? And where is my father now ? ” In the morning a Pigeon , bigger than a turkey , flew down . “ Do you know Geppetto ? ” it asked . “ Three days ago I saw him on the beach . He was making a little boat to cross the sea . For four months he has been looking for his son everywhere . ” “ I’m his son ! ” cried Pinocchio , and the Pigeon took him on its back . They flew all day and all night . In the morning they reached the beach , where people were looking at the stormy sea and shouting .
