IX . The Fight on the Beach The next day Pinocchio went to school . The boys laughed at the puppet , and one of them drew a moustache on his face . For a while Pinocchio stayed calm . Then he kicked one boy and hit another with his elbow . After that , they all liked him . The teacher liked him too , because he worked hard . But Pinocchio liked to spend time with the worst boys in the school . “ Be careful with those friends , ” the Fairy often told him . “ Sooner or later they’ll get you into trouble . ” One morning those boys said to him , “ Have you heard the news ? There’s a Dogfish near the beach , as big as a mountain . Let’s go and see it ! ” “ Is it the same Dogfish that ate my father ? ” thought Pinocchio . So instead of going to school , he ran to the beach with them . But there was no Dogfish there . The sea was as smooth as a mirror . “ Where’s the Dogfish ? ” asked Pinocchio . “ And why did you bring me here ? ” “ So that you’d miss school . You study so much that you make us look bad . ” “ You make me laugh , ” said Pinocchio . “ Careful , Pinocchio ! There’s one of you and seven of us . ” Pinocchio only put his thumb on his nose and waved his fingers at them . Then the bravest boy hit him on the head , and a big fight began . Pinocchio fought like a hero with his hard wooden feet . The boys threw their books at him , but the books missed and fell into the sea . One boy threw Pinocchio’s own heavy maths book at his head . But the book did not hit Pinocchio . It hit another boy , whose name was Eugene . Eugene went as white as a sheet and fell down on the sand . The other boys were scared , and they ran away . Only Pinocchio stayed . He wet his handkerchief in the sea and put it on his friend’s head , crying , “ Eugene , open your eyes ! Why didn’t I go to school ? ” Just then two police officers arrived . “ Whose book is this ? ” they asked . “ Mine , ” said Pinocchio . “ That’s enough . Come with us ! ” The officers left Eugene with some fishermen and walked away with Pinocchio between them . Near the village , the wind blew off Pinocchio’s hat . “ May I go and get my hat ? ” he asked . “ Go on , but be quick . ” Pinocchio picked up his hat , held it in his teeth and ran towards the sea as fast as a bullet . The officers sent their dog after him . It was Alidoro , the fastest dog in the country . He almost caught Pinocchio , but the puppet jumped into the water . Alidoro could not stop , and he fell into the sea too . But he could not swim . “ Help ! I’m drowning ! Save me , Pinocchio ! ” cried the dog . Pinocchio thought of his father’s words : “ If you do good , you never lose . ” He swam to the dog , took him by the tail and pulled him onto the sand .
