I . How Robin Became an Outlaw Long ago , when King Henry the Second ruled England , there was a great forest near the town of Nottingham . It was called Sherwood Forest , and in it lived a famous outlaw called Robin Hood . An outlaw was a man outside the law . The law did not protect him , and anyone could catch him or kill him . No archer in England could shoot as well as Robin . More than a hundred merry men lived with him in the forest . The poor people loved them , because nobody in need ever went to Robin and came away with empty hands . This is how Robin Hood became an outlaw . When Robin was eighteen , the Sheriff of Nottingham announced a shooting match . The Sheriff was the King’s officer in that part of the country , and he was a hard , greedy man . The prize was a barrel of good ale . So one morning in May , Robin took his bow and arrows and left his village , Locksley . He walked through the forest towards Nottingham . The birds were singing , and Robin was thinking about Maid Marian , the girl he loved . Under a big oak tree sat fifteen foresters . Foresters were the King’s men , and they looked after the forest and its deer . They were eating a huge pie and drinking ale , and they all wore Lincoln green , a green cloth from the town of Lincoln . One of them called out , “ Hey , little boy ! Where are you going with your cheap little bow ? ” Robin was angry . “ My bow is as good as yours , ” he said . “ I’m going to the shooting match at Nottingham . ” The foresters laughed . “ Listen to the baby ! You can hardly pull a bowstring ! ” Robin pointed to a herd of deer at the far end of the glade , an open place among the trees . “ Those deer are more than three hundred yards away , ” he said . “ I’ll bet you twenty marks that I can kill the best one . ” A mark was a lot of money in those days . “ Agreed ! ” cried one forester . “ You can’t do it . ” Robin pulled the string back to his ear and let the arrow go . It flew down the glade like a hawk . The biggest deer jumped high into the air and fell dead . “ The bet is mine , ” said Robin . The foresters were furious . “ It is not yours , ” said the forester . “ Go away , or I’ll beat you . ” “ You have killed the King’s deer , ” said another . “ For that , the law can cut off your ears . ” Robin said nothing . He turned and walked away , but his heart was hot with anger . The forester who lost the bet was full of ale . Suddenly he jumped up and shot an arrow at Robin’s back . His head was spinning , so the arrow missed Robin by three inches . Robin turned and shot back . “ You said I was no archer ! ” he shouted . “ Say it again now ! ” His arrow flew straight . The forester fell forward with a cry , and he never got up again . Before the others understood what was happening , Robin disappeared into the deep forest .
