As he ran , all the joy went out of the day . “ I have killed a man , ” he thought , and his heart was sick . “ I was angry and quick , and now I’ll be sorry all my life . But what is done is done . ” From that day Robin lived in Sherwood Forest , and he never went home to Locksley again . He was an outlaw now for two reasons : he killed a man , and he shot the King’s deer . Anyone who brought him to the King’s court could get two hundred pounds . The Sheriff swore to catch him himself . He wanted the money , and the dead forester was one of his relatives . In that first year many other men came to Robin in the forest . Some shot a deer in winter because their families were hungry . Some lost their farms to a greedy lord or to a rich abbot , the head of a big monastery . More than a hundred men gathered around Robin , and they chose him as their leader . Then they made a promise . The rich lords and abbots robbed the poor with high taxes and rents , and the outlaws were going to take that money back . They were going to help the poor and never hurt a child or a woman . Soon money and food came to many poor families when they needed it most . So the country people began to love Robin and his merry men . II . Little John and the Bridge One morning Robin said to his men , “ We haven’t had any fun for fourteen days . I’m going to look for an adventure . Stay here , but listen for my horn . If I need help , I’ll blow it three times . ” He walked all morning , but he found no adventure . At last he came to a wide , stony stream . The only bridge across it was one long , narrow log . As Robin came near , a tall stranger stepped onto the other end . Both men walked faster , because each wanted to cross first . “ Stand back , ” said Robin , “ and let the better man cross first . ” “ Then you stand back , ” said the stranger , “ because I am the better man . ” “ Stay where you are , ” said Robin , “ or I’ll put an arrow between your ribs . ” “ You talk like a coward , ” answered the stranger . “ You have a good bow , and I have only a plain wooden stick . ” Robin’s face went red . “ Nobody has ever called me a coward , ” he said . “ I’ll put down my bow and cut myself a stick . Then we’ll see who the better man is . ” He went into the trees and cut a strong oak staff , six feet long . A long , thick stick like this was called a quarterstaff , and men fought with it for sport . As he worked , Robin watched the stranger . The man was a giant ! He was a head taller than Robin , seven feet tall , and his shoulders were very broad . “ We’ll fight on the bridge , ” said Robin , “ until one of us falls into the water . ” “ With all my heart ! ” cried the stranger , and he spun his staff over his head until it whistled .
