III . The Golden Arrow The Sheriff of Nottingham wanted to catch Robin Hood . First he sent a man with a warrant , an order in the King’s name . But Robin tricked the man and took the warrant from him . Soon everybody in Nottingham was laughing at the Sheriff . So he rode to London and told King Henry about Robin Hood . The King grew angry . “ You come here with a hundred men in armour , ” he said , “ but you can’t catch a few outlaws in your own county ! Go home and think of a plan yourself . If you can’t make people obey my laws , you won’t be my Sheriff for long . ” All the way home the Sheriff thought and thought . He knew that Robin was bold and often came into Nottingham . Suddenly he hit his leg with his hand . “ I have it ! ” he cried . “ A shooting match ! Robin will never miss a shooting match . ” So he invited every archer in the country to a great match at Nottingham . The prize was an arrow of pure gold . Robin called his men together . “ I’d like one of us to win that golden arrow , ” he said . “ Don’t go , master , ” said young David of Doncaster . “ I heard that this match is a trap . The Sheriff only wants to catch you . ” “ Do you want people to say that the Sheriff made Robin Hood afraid ? ” said Robin . “ We’ll meet his trick with a trick . Some of you will dress as friars , some as farmers or beggars . But every man will carry a good bow or sword . I’ll shoot for the arrow myself . ” On the day of the match , lords and ladies sat on benches beside the field , and poor people stood behind a rail . The best archers in England were there . Among them was Gilbert of the Red Cap , the Sheriff’s own chief archer . There was also old Adam of the Dell , who won many famous matches in his long life . The Sheriff sat in a special seat near the target , in purple velvet and a gold chain . A herald blew a silver horn and read out the rules . “ Every man will shoot one arrow . The ten best will shoot two arrows each . Then the three best of them will shoot three arrows each . The best of the three will win the prize . ” The Sheriff looked carefully at all the archers , but none of them wore Lincoln green . “ He’s here somewhere , ” he thought . “ When only ten are left , I’ll find him . ” When ten men were left , six were famous archers . Two were men from Yorkshire , and one was a stranger in blue from London . The last was a beggar in old , torn red clothes , with a brown beard and a patch over one eye . “ Do you see Robin Hood among them ? ” the Sheriff asked a guard . “ No , sir . Robin’s beard is yellow , and the beggar in red has a brown beard and only one good eye . And the others are too tall , or too short , or too narrow . ”
