“ You are the calmest runaway I have ever seen , ” said Robin . “ You walk along the road and smell a rose ! ” Then he smiled . “ But you must change your name now . Scarlet is a bright red colour , so because of your clothes , we’ll call you Will Scarlet . ” Little John shook Will’s hand . “ Welcome , Will Scarlet , ” he said , and he winked at Arthur . “ People will sing many songs about this day . They’ll sing about how Robin Hood taught all three of us to fight with a staff ! ” “ Please , Little John , ” said Robin quickly , “ let’s keep today’s story to ourselves . ” “ As you wish , master , ” said Little John . “ I didn’t see anyone fall in the dust . ” And they all went back to Sherwood , laughing , except Robin , whose bones were very sore . VI . The Minstrel by the Pool A few days later Robin said , “ We haven’t had a rich guest for a long time , and our purse is getting thin . Will Stutely , take some men to the big road and bring back a guest who can pay for his dinner . And take Will Scarlet with you . ” All day they hid near the road , but no rich traveller came . At sunset they started back with empty hands . On the way they heard a sad sound . By a pool under a willow tree , a young man lay on the grass , crying bitterly . A beautiful harp hung from the branches above him . “ Why are you watering the grass with salty tears ? ” shouted Will Stutely . “ Stop crying like a little girl ! ” The young man’s face showed that the words hurt him . So Will Scarlet put a kind hand on his shoulder . “ You’re in trouble , poor lad , ” he said . “ Come with us . Maybe our master can help you . ” They brought him to the greenwood tree . It was dark now , and meat and fish were roasting over a big fire . “ Welcome , friend , ” said Robin . “ Every guest here must pay , you know . I hope your purse is full . ” “ I have no money , ” said the young man sadly . “ I have only half of a sixpence . The other half is with my love . She wears it on a silk string around her neck . ” The men laughed , and the young man went red . But Robin looked kindly into his face . “ A young face , a good face , ” he said quietly . “ But grief comes to the young as well as the old . What’s your name , lad ? ” “ Allan a Dale . ” “ Are you the singer with the wonderful voice ? Everybody is talking about you . Sit down and tell us your troubles . ” So Allan told his story . He was a minstrel , a travelling singer . One evening he sang in a farmhouse in the valley of the river Rother . The farmer had a daughter called Ellen , as lovely as the first flower of spring . She listened to his songs and loved him . They broke a sixpence in two and promised to be true to each other for ever . But her father found out and took her away . And that morning Allan heard terrible news . In two days she was going to marry old Sir Stephen of Trent . Her father wanted her to marry a knight , but Ellen did not want to .
