Even Little John felt a lump in his throat . “ Does that old knight think that young girls can be bought like chickens at the market ? ” he growled . “ Tell me , Allan , ” said Robin . “ If you and Ellen were together in a church with a priest , would she marry you , even if her father said no ? ” “ Yes , she would ! ” cried Allan . “ Then in two days she’ll be your wife . But we need a priest , and priests don’t like me very much . ” Will Scarlet laughed . “ I know a friar who will help us , if you can get on his good side . A friar is a kind of priest who lives simply . People call him the Curtal Friar of Fountain Dale . His hut is by a river , a long day’s walk from here . ” “ Then I’ll find him tomorrow , ” said Robin . “ Give me your hand , Allan . I promise you , in two days Ellen will be your wife . ” After the feast Allan took his harp and sang an old song about a girl and a magic bird . His voice was so sweet that nobody moved while he sang . When he finished , Robin said , “ Allan , will you stay with us in the green forest ? ” Allan took Robin’s hand . “ I’ll stay with you always , master , ” he said . “ Nobody has ever been so kind to me . ” And so Allan a Dale became one of Robin Hood’s merry men . VII . Friar Tuck Early the next morning , Robin set out with Little John , Will Scarlet and two other men . Under his green coat he wore a shirt of steel rings , and a good sword hung at his side . After many hours they came to a wide , quiet river . “ The friar lives somewhere near this river , ” said Will Scarlet . “ Wait here , ” said Robin . “ I want to have this adventure alone . But listen for my horn . ” Robin walked on alone , and soon he heard two voices below the river bank . The two voices sounded exactly the same . Robin lay down on the grass and looked over the edge . Under a willow tree sat a big , strong friar with a round head and red cheeks . His neck was as thick as a bull’s , and his little grey eyes were full of fun . He had a huge meat pie between his knees and a bottle of wine beside him . And he was talking to himself , as if he was two people ! “ Dear lad , will you have a drink ? ” he said . “ No , you first . No , I insist ! ” He passed the bottle from one hand to the other , and he drank enough for two . Then he sang a love song in two voices , a deep one for the young man and a high , squeaky one for the girl . Robin laughed and joined in the song , and they sang the last lines together so loudly that people could hear them a mile away . At once the friar jumped up and pulled out a big sword . “ Who’s spying on me ? ” he cried .
