Then Will Scarlet stepped in front of them . “ Down , Fangs ! Down , Beauty ! ” he cried . At once the dogs stopped and licked his hands . “ Master William Gamwell ! ” cried the friar . “ What are you doing with these men ? ” “ My name is Will Scarlet now , Tuck , ” said Will . “ And this is my uncle , Robin Hood . ” The friar looked a little ashamed . He held out his big hand to Robin , who was climbing down from the tree . “ Please forgive me , ” he said . “ But I’m still looking for the Curtal Friar , ” said Robin . “ Uncle , he’s standing right next to you ! ” laughed Will . “ Why didn’t you tell me ? ” cried Robin . “ You didn’t ask , ” said the friar . “ Some people call me the Curtal Friar of Fountain Dale , but most people call me simply Friar Tuck . ” “ I like that name best , ” said Robin . “ Come back to Sherwood with us , and I’ll tell you everything on the way . ” VIII . Allan a Dale’s Wedding On the morning of Ellen’s wedding , Robin chose twenty of his best men . He put on a bright coat with red and yellow ribbons , like a travelling harper , and hung a harp on his back . Then he gave Little John two heavy bags . Little John heard the sound of gold inside . They walked to the valley of the river Rother , to the small church where Ellen was going to be married . The men hid behind a stone wall across the road . Young David of Doncaster lay on top of the wall under some flowers and kept watch . Allan walked up and down , too nervous to sit still , and Friar Tuck snored . “ What can you see , David ? ” asked Robin . “ I see white clouds and three black crows . Nothing else . ” After a long time David said , “ Now an old friar with a big bunch of keys is going to the church door . ” Robin woke Friar Tuck . “ Go and get inside the church , holy man . Be there when we need you . ” Tuck helped the old friar with the rusty lock , and the old man let him in . Then Little John and Will Stutely went in too . Robin sat on a bench by the door in his harper’s coat . Soon the Bishop of Hereford rode up . He wore rich silk , a heavy gold chain and a cap full of jewels . “ Poor people paid for all that gold , ” thought Robin . “ Who are you , fellow , in such bright feathers ? ” asked the Bishop . “ I’m a harper from the north , ” said Robin . “ My music is magic . If I play at this wedding , the bride will love her husband for the rest of her life . ” “ Really ? ” said the Bishop . “ This girl has bewitched my poor cousin Stephen . If you can make her love him , I’ll give you anything you ask . ” Then the wedding party arrived . First came Sir Stephen , a tall , thin knight in black silk , with grey hair . Beside him rode Ellen’s father , a farmer called Edward of Deirwold . Behind them came Ellen , with six soldiers . She was the most beautiful girl Robin had ever seen . But today she was pale and sad , like a white flower with a broken stem .
