IX . The King in Sherwood Years passed . Old King Henry died , and his son Richard became King . People called him Richard the Lionheart , because he was as brave as a lion . One autumn King Richard came to Nottingham as the Sheriff’s guest . Great crowds filled the streets . As the King rode past with the Sheriff , a big friar in the crowd shouted , “ Heaven bless our good King Richard ! ” The King laughed . “ Sheriff , you have the loudest priests in England ! ” But the Sheriff went white . He knew that friar . It was Friar Tuck , and behind him stood Robin Hood , Little John and many of the band . That evening , at a great feast , the King said , “ Tell me about this Robin Hood . ” A young knight , Sir Henry of the Lea , told a story . Once his father , Sir Richard of the Lea , was deep in debt , and he almost lost his castle and his land . But Robin Hood lent him the money and saved him . And where did Robin get that money ? He took it from the Bishop of Hereford , when the Bishop came through Sherwood with a fat purse . The King and his guests laughed until they cried , and the Bishop , who was at the feast , turned red . “ I’d give a hundred pounds to meet this merry rascal , ” said the King . “ That’s easy , ” said a knight called Sir Hubert . “ Let’s dress as friars and ride through Sherwood with a purse of a hundred pounds . I’m sure we’ll meet Robin Hood . ” The King loved the plan . When the Sheriff heard about it , he was horrified . “ Your Majesty , this man doesn’t respect the King’s laws ! ” “ Why should I be afraid of him ? ” said the King . “ I have never done him any harm . ” So the next day seven men in black friars ’ robes rode into Sherwood on mules . The tallest of them was the King . After many miles he said , “ I forgot to bring anything to drink ! I’d give fifty pounds for a drink now . ” At once a man with a yellow beard and merry blue eyes stepped out of the bushes . “ Holy brother , ” he said , “ for fifty pounds we’ll give you a drink and a fine feast too . ” He whistled , and sixty men in green jumped out of the trees . “ My name is Robin Hood , ” he said . “ Perhaps you have heard it . ” Robin took the King’s purse . He kept fifty pounds for the band and gave fifty back . “ But won’t you put back your hood ? ” he asked . “ I’d like to see your face . ”
