Then Peter came back . He would never keep a girl in the Neverland if she wanted to go . “ Tiger Lily’s warriors will guide you through the wood , ” he said , “ and Tinker Bell will take you across the sea . ” Wendy looked at the sad faces round her . “ If you all come with me , ” she said , “ I’m almost sure my parents will adopt you . ” The boys jumped with joy and ran to get their things . “ Get your things too , Peter , ” said Wendy . “ No , ” said Peter . “ I’m not going with you , Wendy . Perhaps my mother would say I was old . I just want always to be a little boy and to have fun . ” He played a happy tune on his pipes to show that he did not care . “ You will remember to take your medicine , Peter ? ” “ Yes . Goodbye , Wendy . Tinker Bell , lead the way . ” Tink flew up the nearest tree . But nobody followed her . At that very moment there were terrible sounds above : shouts , cries and the crash of swords . The pirates were attacking . X . Do You Believe in Fairies ? Hook did not attack in the usual way . Everyone knew that Tiger Lily’s people always attacked just before dawn , and the pirates were supposed to wait for them . But Hook did not wait . He came through the dark wood and attacked the warriors while they sat at their posts . They fought bravely , but it was too late . Many of them fell that night . Tiger Lily and a few of her people cut their way through the pirates and escaped into the forest . Below , the children did not know who had won . “ If Tiger Lily’s people have won , ” said Peter , “ they will beat their drum . That is always their sign . ” The pirates heard him . Hook told Smee to beat the drum , and Smee beat it twice . “ They have won ! ” cried Peter below . The children said goodbye to him again and went up the trees one by one . At the top of each tree a pirate was waiting . The pirates threw the boys from one to another like bags . Wendy came last , and Hook raised his hat to her very politely and gave her his arm . The pirates tied the children up so that they could not fly away . But Slightly was too fat for his rope . Hook guessed his secret at once . Slightly had grown fat , and he had secretly cut his tree wider . Now a man could climb down it . The pirates carried the children to their ship inside Wendy’s little house , but Hook stayed behind alone . He went quietly down Slightly’s tree . Peter was lying on the big bed , fast asleep . He had decided not to take his medicine , to make Wendy sad . His cup stood on a shelf near the door . Hook could not reach Peter through the door , but he could reach the cup . He always carried a terrible poison , and he poured five drops of it into Peter’s medicine . Then he climbed back up and went away through the dark forest , talking to himself .
