At about ten o’clock someone knocked softly on Peter’s tree . It was Tink . She told him that the pirates had taken Wendy and the boys to their ship . “ I’ll rescue her ! ” cried Peter . Then he thought of something that would please Wendy . He could take his medicine . He picked up the cup . “ No ! ” cried Tink . She had heard Hook talking in the forest . “ It’s poisoned ! ” “ Don’t be silly . How could Hook get down here ? ” He raised the cup to his lips . Quick as lightning , Tink flew between his lips and the cup , and she drank it all . “ Tink , how dare you drink my medicine ? ” “ It was poisoned , Peter , ” she said softly . “ And now I am going to die . ” “ Oh , Tink , did you drink it to save me ? ” She gave his nose a loving bite and said , “ You silly donkey . ” Then she went to her little bed and lay down . Her light grew weaker and weaker . If it went out , she would be gone for ever . Very quietly she said that she might get well again if children believed in fairies . There were no children near . But Peter called out to all the children in the world who were dreaming of the Neverland . “ Do you believe in fairies ? If you believe , clap your hands ! Don’t let Tink die ! ” Many clapped . Some did not . But Tink was saved . Her voice grew strong , and soon she was flying round the room brighter than ever . “ And now to rescue Wendy ! ” said Peter . The island was silent under a thin cover of snow . The crocodile passed him , but nothing else moved . Peter made a promise : “ This time it is Hook or me . ” Then he went off through the moonlit wood . XI . The Pirate Ship The pirate ship , the Jolly Roger , lay in a dark bay . On deck , Smee was working at a sewing machine . Hook walked up and down , deep in thought . He believed that Peter was dead , but he was not happy . Hook had been to a famous school as a boy , and he still cared very much about good manners . He called them “ good form ” . Now a voice inside him kept asking , “ Have you been good form today ? ” “ Bring up the prisoners ! ” he shouted at last . The boys stood before him in a line . “ Six of you will walk the plank tonight , ” said Hook , “ but I have room for two cabin boys . ” “ I don’t think my mother would like me to be a pirate , ” said Tootles politely . Hook turned to John . “ Didn’t you ever want to be a pirate , boy ? ” “ I once thought of calling myself Red - handed Jack , ” said John . “ Would we still be loyal to the King ? ” “ You would have to say ‘ Down with the King ’ . ” “ Then I refuse ! ” cried John . “ And I refuse ! ” cried Michael . “ That seals your fate , ” said Hook . “ Bring up their mother . Get the plank ready . ” When Wendy was brought up , the boys tried to look brave . Wendy did not admire the pirates at all . She only saw that the ship had not been cleaned for years . “ So , my beauty , ” said Hook , “ you will see your children walk the plank . Silence , all , for a mother’s last words . ”
