“ Dear boys , ” said Wendy firmly , “ I have a message from your real mothers . It is this : ‘ We hope our sons will die like English gentlemen . ’ ” Even the pirates were quiet . Smee tied Wendy to the mast . “ I’ll save you if you promise to be my mother , ” he whispered . But she would not promise , not even to Smee . Hook stepped towards Wendy . He wanted her to watch the boys walk the plank . But then he heard a sound . Tick , tick , tick . At once he fell to the deck in a heap . Then he crawled on his knees as far from the sound as he could go . “ Hide me ! ” he cried . The pirates stood round him . None of them thought of fighting . The crocodile was coming on board ! The boys ran to the side of the ship to look . But it was not the crocodile . It was Peter . He put his finger to his lips , and he went on ticking . XII . Hook or Me On the island Peter had seen the crocodile pass , and he had noticed that it was not ticking . Its clock had stopped at last . So Peter began to tick himself , and the wild animals left him alone . He swam out to the ship , still ticking without knowing it . Only when he saw the pirates hiding Hook did he understand . “ How clever of me ! ” he thought . He struck down one pirate quickly , and the boys dropped him into the sea without a sound . “ One ! ” counted Slightly . Then Peter slipped into Hook’s cabin and hid in the dark . “ It’s gone , captain , ” said Smee . Hook stood up . He hated the boys now , because they had seen him afraid . “ Jukes , ” he said , “ bring the whip . It’s in the cabin . ” Bill Jukes went into the cabin . A moment later there was a terrible scream , and then a sound like a cock crowing . The boys knew that sound well . “ Two , ” said Slightly . Cecco went in next , and again there was a scream and a crow . “ Three , ” said Slightly . Hook ordered Starkey to go in , but Starkey jumped into the sea instead . “ Four , ” said Slightly . Then Hook went in himself with a lamp . He came out again without it . “ Something blew out the light , ” he said . Now the pirates were terrified . “ Open the door and push the boys in , ” said Hook . “ Let them fight the thing in there . ” So the boys were pushed into the cabin . Inside , Peter found the key to their chains and set them free . They crept out quietly and hid . Peter cut Wendy’s ropes , put on her cloak and stood by the mast in her place . Then he crowed . To the pirates the crow meant that all the boys were dead . “ It’s the girl , ” said Hook . “ There’s never luck on a ship with a woman on board . Throw her into the sea ! ” The pirates ran at the figure in the cloak . “ Nobody can save you now , missy , ” one of them said .
