“ There’s one , ” said the figure . “ Peter Pan the avenger ! ” Peter threw off the cloak . “ Down , boys , and at them ! ” At once the ship was full of fighting . The pirates were stronger , but they were confused and afraid . Some jumped into the sea . Others hid in dark corners , but Slightly found them with a lamp . At last only Hook was left , and he fought off all the boys at once . Then a voice called , “ Put up your swords , boys . This man is mine . ” “ So , Pan , ” said Hook , “ this is all your doing . ” “ Yes , James Hook , it is all my doing . ” They fought for a long time . Peter was very quick , and at last he wounded Hook . When Hook saw his own blood , his sword fell from his hand . “ Now ! ” cried all the boys . But Peter let Hook pick up his sword again . Hook felt bitterly that Peter was showing good form . “ Pan , who and what are you ? ” he cried . “ I’m youth , I’m joy , ” said Peter . “ I’m a little bird that has broken out of the egg . ” Hook fought on without hope . He ran and set fire to the gunpowder . “ In two minutes the ship will be blown to pieces ! ” he cried . But Peter carried the burning powder out and calmly threw it into the sea . Now Hook had only one wish left . He wanted to see Peter show bad form . He climbed onto the side of the ship . Below him the crocodile was waiting in the water , but Hook did not know it . Peter flew at him with his dagger , and Hook made a sign for him to use his foot instead . So Peter kicked him . “ Bad form ! ” cried Hook happily , and he fell into the sea , right into the crocodile’s mouth . That was the end of James Hook . Only two pirates reached the shore . Starkey was caught by Tiger Lily’s people , and he had to look after their babies . Smee travelled the world , telling everyone that he was the only man James Hook had feared . Wendy took the boys into Hook’s cabin and showed them his watch . It was half past one ! She put them to bed at once . That night Peter had a bad dream and cried in his sleep for a long time , and Wendy held him tightly . XIII . The Return Home The next morning Captain Peter stood at the wheel , and they sailed the ship towards the mainland . Now we must go back to number 14 . After the children flew away , Mr Darling felt that it was all his fault . So he crawled into Nana’s kennel and promised never to leave it until his children came back . Every morning the kennel was carried to a cab , and the cab took him to his office . Soon everybody in London knew about him , and crowds followed the cab and cheered . One Thursday evening Mrs Darling sat in the nursery , looking very sad . The little kiss in the corner of her mouth was almost gone . The kennel came home , and Mr Darling lay down in it , very tired . “ Shut the window , dear , ” he said . “ I feel a cold wind . ”
