“ Oh , George , never ask me to do that . The window must always be open for them , always . ” She went into the next room and played the piano , and soon he fell asleep . And while she played , somebody flew into the nursery . But it was not the children . It was Peter and Tinker Bell . “ Quick , Tink , shut the window and lock it ! ” said Peter . “ When Wendy comes , she will think her mother has locked her out . Then she will have to go back with me . ” He looked into the next room . Mrs Darling was playing “ Home , Sweet Home ” . Peter did not know the tune , but he knew what it was saying : “ Come back , Wendy , Wendy , Wendy . ” “ You will never see Wendy again , lady , ” he cried , “ because the window is locked ! ” Then the music stopped . Mrs Darling had put her head down on the piano , and there were two tears in her eyes . “ She is very fond of Wendy , ” thought Peter . “ But I’m fond of her too . We can’t both have her , lady . ” He made funny faces and jumped about , but it felt as if she was inside him , knocking . “ Oh , all right , ” he said at last , and he opened the window . “ Come on , Tink . We don’t want any silly mothers . ” And he flew away . So Wendy , John and Michael found the window open after all . Michael looked round the room . “ I think I have been here before , ” he said . John looked into the kennel . “ There’s a man inside it ! ” It was their father . Then they heard the piano . “ It’s Mother ! ” said Wendy . “ Then aren’t you really our mother , Wendy ? ” asked Michael . “ Oh dear , ” said Wendy , “ it was time we came back . ” They got into their beds , just as if they had never been away . When Mrs Darling came in , she saw them , but she did not believe it . She had seen them in their beds so often in her dreams . “ Mother ! ” cried Wendy . “ That’s Wendy , ” she said , but she was sure it was a dream . “ Mother ! ” cried John and Michael . She held out her arms , and this time her arms closed round her three children . They had jumped out of bed and run to her . “ George ! George ! ” she cried . Mr Darling woke up , and Nana came running in . There could not be a lovelier sight . But nobody saw it except a little boy at the window . He had known many joys that other children never know . But this was the one joy that he could never have . XIV . When Wendy Grew Up The lost boys came upstairs and stood in a row in front of Mrs Darling . Their eyes asked her to keep them , and she said yes at once . Mr Darling was a little hurt , because nobody had asked him . But when they asked him too , he was very pleased . He danced through the house to look for places for them , and they all fitted in .
