IV . The Island Comes True That evening the whole island was awake , because Peter was coming home . The lost boys were looking for Peter . The pirates were looking for the lost boys . Tiger Lily and her warriors were looking for the pirates . The wild animals were looking for the warriors . They all went round and round the island , but they never met , because they all went at the same speed . There were six lost boys , all dressed in bearskins . First came Tootles , the kindest and humblest . Then came Nibs , Slightly and Curly , and last came the Twins . Behind them came the pirates , singing their terrible song . There were Starkey , Bill Jukes , Cecco with gold coins in his ears , and Smee , a friendly Irishman in glasses . In the middle of them sat Captain Hook . He had long black curls and sad blue eyes , but when he was angry , two red spots burned in them . He had beautiful manners , and he smoked two cigars at once . His men were terribly afraid of him and his iron claw . After the pirates came Tiger Lily and her warriors , moving without a sound . Tiger Lily was the daughter of the chief , and she was proud and brave . After them came the wild animals , all hungry . And last of all came a huge crocodile . When the boys heard the pirates ’ song , they vanished into their home under the ground . Seven hollow trees stood above it . Each tree had a hole the size of a boy , and these were the doors . Only Nibs ran off into the wood . Starkey took out his pistol , but Hook stopped him . “ The noise would bring Tiger Lily’s warriors , ” he said . Hook sat down on a big mushroom and talked to Smee . “ Most of all I want their captain , Peter Pan , ” he said . “ He cut off my hand and threw it to a crocodile . The crocodile liked it so much that it has followed me ever since . It wants the rest of me . Luckily it swallowed a clock , and the clock goes tick , tick inside it . So I always hear it coming . ” “ Some day the clock will stop , ” said Smee . “ That is the fear I live with , ” said Hook . Then the mushroom grew hot under him . Hook pulled it up , and smoke came out of the ground . It was the chimney of the boys ’ home ! Hook smiled a terrible smile . “ We will bake a big rich cake with green sugar on top , ” he said , “ and leave it by the Mermaids ’ Lagoon . The boys have no mother to tell them that rich cake is bad for them . They will eat it all and die ! ” But just then they heard a small sound . Tick , tick , tick . “ The crocodile ! ” cried Hook , and he ran away .
