Soon Nibs came running back with a pack of wolves behind him . “ What would Peter do ? ” cried the boys . “ He would look at them through his legs ! ” So they bent down and looked at the wolves through their legs , and the wolves ran away . Then Nibs pointed at the sky . “ A great white bird ! It looks so tired , and it is saying ‘ Poor Wendy ’ . ” It was Wendy , and Tinker Bell was pinching her . “ Peter wants you to shoot the Wendy , ” said Tink . The boys always did what Peter wanted . Tootles had his bow with him , and he shot an arrow into the sky . Wendy fell to the ground . V . The Little House The boys stood round Wendy in terrible silence . “ This is no bird , ” said Slightly . “ I think it is a lady . ” “ A lady to take care of us at last , ” said one of the Twins , “ and you have killed her ! ” Just then they heard Peter crow like a cock . That was his signal . He landed in front of them . “ Great news , boys ! ” he cried . “ I have brought a mother for you all ! ” Tootles showed him Wendy and fell on his knees . “ It was my arrow , Peter . Strike me . ” Peter took the arrow . Twice he raised it , and twice his hand fell . “ I cannot strike , ” he said . “ Something stops my hand . ” “ Look ! ” cried Nibs . “ The Wendy lady moved her arm ! ” Peter knelt down and found his acorn button on her chain . “ The arrow hit this , ” he said . “ It is the kiss I gave her . It has saved her life ! ” The boys told Peter what Tink had done . “ Tinker Bell , ” he cried , “ I am your friend no more ! Go away for ever ! ” She begged him , but he did not listen . Then Wendy raised her arm again , and at last he said , “ Well , not for ever . For a whole week . ” “ We must not carry the lady down , ” said Peter . “ That would not be polite . We will build a little house round her ! ” The boys ran for wood and branches . On the way they met John and Michael , and Peter put them to work too . Slightly put on John’s hat and pretended to be a doctor . For Peter , pretending and real life were exactly the same . Wendy began to sing in her sleep about the house she wanted . It had little red walls and a roof of green moss . So the boys built exactly that . They made windows with yellow leaves for blinds , and Tootles gave the bottom of his shoe for a door knocker . Peter put John’s hat on the roof , and at once smoke came out of it . Now the house had a chimney . Peter knocked on the door , and Wendy came out . “ Where am I ? ” she said . “ Wendy lady , ” said Slightly , “ we built this house for you . ” Then all the boys fell on their knees . “ Oh , Wendy lady , be our mother ! ” “ But I am only a little girl , ” said Wendy . “ I have no real experience . ” “ That doesn’t matter , ” said Peter . “ What we need is just a nice motherly person . ” “ Oh dear , ” said Wendy , “ I feel that is exactly what I am . Very well , I will do my best . Come inside at once , you naughty children . I’m sure your feet are wet . And before bed I will finish the story of Cinderella . ” That was the first of many happy evenings . That night Peter kept watch outside the little house with his sword , until he fell asleep by the door .
